U.S. GIRLS' JUNIOR
Quotable: The Semifinalists Sound Off
July 22, 2016 | Paramus, N.J.
The winners of Friday morning's quarterfinal matches have one goal for the rest of the day, and that is to earn a spot in Saturday's 36-hole final. Here is what they had to say after their wins early Friday.
Hye-Jin Choi- Defeated Ya Chun Chang, 5 and 3. Faces Andrea Lee at 12:15 p.m.:
“Although my drives were not ideal, I did have great saves, plus when I made mistakes, my opponent also made mistakes, so I took a chance. When I had a chance at birdie, I took the opportunity to step up and focus and make birdie to win the hole."
“Because it's the semifinals, these are the four girls, including myself, who are the best in this tournament, so definitely I'm going to practice right now so that I can avoid any mistakes and go over the mistakes that I made today at certain holes.”
Andrea Lee- Defeated Waverly Whiston, 4 and 3. Faces Hye-Jin Choi at 12:15 p.m.:
“I was just playing my own game. I wasn't trying to think of what Waverly was doing. I was 2 up on her early, but then she got it back to all square through 9. But I wasn't trying to think about the score too much, and just focused on what I was doing, and it turned out well.”
“I just met [Hye-Jin Choi] this week, actually. One of my good friends, Eun Jeong [Seong], she knows her, so I managed to meet her through her, and she's playing really good golf. She's the No. 1 seed, but I’m not going to try and think about what she's doing, and we'll see how it goes.”
Yujeong Son- Defeated Xinying Wang, 3 and 2. Faces Eun Jeong Seong at 12:25 p.m.:
“I thought I played really good, but she was kind of having some trouble on the front, but she quickly caught up on the back. I could have made a few more putts to give myself a bigger lead, but I didn't, but that's okay. My game was to get pars and just to stay calm.”
“I don't even want to look that far ahead [to the final], but it would mean a lot to me. I want to take it one shot at a time and not get ahead of myself, because I know whoever [my opponent is], I'm going to have a tough time trying to beat them. I just really want to have fun.”
Eun Jeong Seong- Defeated Xinying Wang, 3 and 2. Faces Yujeong Son at 12:25 p.m.:
"Today I think was better than yesterday. Yesterday I played 36 holes, so I was a little tired and my tee shot was a little off. [Wang] missed some short putts on the front nine, but I made short putts today, so I won those holes to go 3 up and relaxed."
"I’m excited because we are all Korean. Andrea [was born] in the U.S., but she is Korean so it is really funny we all are in semi-finals."
