Golf is a game for every age and ability – where success is found between golfers, equipment and the courses on which they play. Every aspect of those three components involves science, technology engineering and math.
At the USGA, we have teams of experts in many STEM fields – from agronomy and turfgrass researchers, to aerospace and mechanical engineers, technology innovators and computer scientists, player performance and data analysis directors – all tasked with advancing the game of golf and leaving the game better than we found it.
Whether you’re a student or educator, a golfer, or someone looking for a career path in the game, we have tools you can use and STEM experiences to deepen your knowledge.
2025 Pinehurst Summer STEM Program
We invite your 10-14 year old student to join us for a half day STEM experience taught by USGA experts this June and July at our Golf House Pinehurst campus. Field Days include:
- Learning the basics of STEM and golf at the USGA Science of Golf Gallery – including architecture and golf course management, the physics of how golf balls travel, agronomy and more
- Visiting the USGA Equipment Testing Lab (the only one of its kind in North America) to test golf clubs and golf balls, including laser technology, robotics, and how golf balls/clubs are made to perform
- Exploring the world of native plants and pollinator plants on golf courses to promote biodiversity – and planting your own vegetables
- Explaining how the putting robot works, and what it’s used for
- Visiting Pinehurst Resort
- Developing your own science experiment
Classes are supervised and run from 9 a.m. to noon; cost is $60/student and includes a special field bag and STEM book. Field Days are limited to 18 students per day.
