Agronomist Southeast Region |
O'Brien was an agronomist in the USGA Green Section's Southeast Region, which included Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Bermuda. He joined the USGA Green Section in 1979 after receiving his master’s degree in agronomy from West Virginia University and a bachelor’s degree from Marietta College in Ohio. He was born in the small town of Emsworth, Pa., just minutes away from downtown Pittsburgh and his three favorite sports teams: the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers.
His main responsibility was working as part of the team that provided the USGA’s Course Consulting Service in the Southeast Region. The team worked with approximately 250 golf courses annually, including public, private, military and resort facilities. His goal was to help all courses and golf course superintendents become as successful as possible each year.
