Today’s golf course irrigation systems are smarter and more efficient than ever. Computerized controls, weather stations, moisture sensors, and a network of hundreds or thousands of sprinklers all help superintendents get water where it is needed. But some systems are older and/or less sophisticated than others, and no system can water every square inch of a golf course perfectly because there are so many variables involved – not just in sprinkler coverage, but in how water actually enters and moves through the soil. Understanding these variables explains why some areas might be firmer, softer, browner or greener than others.
To start with, a golf course is not flat and topography affects how water enters the ground. Slopes shed water while low areas collect it. A south-facing, steeply sloped area has a double whammy of shedding irrigation water while receiving full sun that accelerates drying. Conversely, a bowl or soft swale in the shade may be greener and softer more often.
Beneath the surface, soil type can change dramatically from one hole to the next, or even within the same fairway. Sandy soils drain quickly and require more frequent watering while heavier soils hold water longer and stay softer after rain. Even if the irrigation system applies water evenly, the soil affects how that water is retained or lost.
Wind is another significant variable. Even light wind can distort sprinkler patterns and accelerate drying. Exposed and/or elevated areas will dry out faster in the wind than low, sheltered areas. Trees also play a role in the inconsistency of moisture across a golf course. Tree shade can keep some areas wetter while tree roots pull water from the soil and contribute to drying. The impact of shade and roots can change within a few feet, which is a level of variability that no sprinkler system can fully account for.
Maintenance practices and golfer traffic patterns also affect how water enters and moves through the soil. As areas become compacted by cart or foot traffic, water has a harder time getting into the ground. Aeration relieves compaction and creates channels for water to move into the soil, and applying wetting agents helps even out moisture, but these practices cost time and money so they usually have to be focused on the most important areas.
Due to these and other variables, overnight watering can only do so much. Hand watering and running individual sprinklers during the day is essential. Rather than soaking an entire putting green or fairway, just the dry spots can be targeted. In-ground soil sensors and portable moisture meters help the maintenance team predict which areas need water before the grass is visibly stressed, which is why you may see them watering areas that look fine.
A new, modern irrigation system addresses the varying water needs across a golf course better than an old one, but sprinklers alone will never be able to water an entire golf course perfectly. Topography, exposure to sun and wind, soil characteristics, traffic patterns, and maintenance practices all influence how water behaves after it is applied. The combination of smart irrigation, hands-on watering, and sound maintenance practices is what ultimately delivers great playing conditions.
