We are excited to welcome Steve Wilson, CGCS, to the USGA Green Section as a Central Region agronomist, where he will be working closely with courses in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas. As a longtime superintendent in the area, Steve understands the unique dynamics and challenges of growing turf in this region.
Steve’s love for golf course maintenance started young. He grew up across the street from the parents of the legendary Dr. Jack Fry, a long time turfgrass professor, researcher and extension specialist at Kansas State. Eventually, Steve got to learn from Fry while earning his bachelor’s degree in horticulture at Kansas State. After college, Steve worked as an assistant superintendent at Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kansas, where he met his mentors, former superintendent John Anderson and current director of grounds Jeff White.
Over the last few decades, Steve has taken on increasingly challenging responsibilities as a superintendent at several highly regarded golf clubs. He has hosted numerous amateur events and USGA qualifiers, and most recently completed multiple construction and renovation projects at Milburn Country Club, outside Kansas City, where he was the director of grounds for over 13 years. While at Milburn, Steve was honored by his peers in the Heart of America Golf Course Superintendents Association with the Chester Mendenhall Award in 2017 for devoting extensive time and effort to promoting golf and the art of golf course maintenance.
In his free time, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, attending his sons’ sporting events, visiting his daughter at the University of Arkansas, going to the lake, and playing golf. He and his wife, Alisha, live near Kansas City where they cheer for the Royals, the Chiefs and the Kansas State Wildcats.
