We are pleased to announce that Brian Gietka, CGCS, has been hired as an agronomist in the USGA Green Section’s East Region. Brian will focus on supporting golf courses in the mid-Atlantic. As a longtime superintendent in the area, Brian understands the unique dynamics and challenges of growing turf in the mid-Atlantic and is looking forward to serving the region.
Like many superintendents, Brian fell in love with the industry after joining a maintenance crew one summer. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resource science with a concentration in turfgrass management from the University of Maryland in 2003. Brian was an assistant superintendent at multiple Baltimore-area clubs prior to becoming the golf course superintendent at Fountain Head Country Club in 2008, where he worked until joining the USGA. He earned the Certified Golf Course Superintendent designation in 2015.
As a superintendent, Brian was a consistent Course Consulting Service subscriber, so he fully understands the value a USGA agronomist brings to a facility. “Early on in my career, several USGA agronomists had a tremendous impact on me, so having the opportunity to carry on that legacy is a dream come true. The USGA’s research and innovation continues to positively shape the game and I’m thrilled to be part of it,” said Gietka.
He is also thankful for mentors like Steve Potter, CGCS, Dr. Peter Dernoeden and Stanley Zontek for teaching him the importance of developing relationships, having an advanced knowledge of agronomics and being a champion for others.
Brian is married with two daughters and a Nova Scotia Duck Toller. He enjoys spending time outdoors with all of them.
