We are delighted to announce that Dr. Michael Kenna, retired director of USGA Green Section Research, has been honored with the 2021 Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). The award is “given to an individual who has made an outstanding, substantive and enduring contribution to the advancement of the golf course superintendent profession,” according to GCSAA. The entire Green Section staff couldn’t be more proud of Mike’s achievement in receiving this prestigious award.

In his almost 30 years of service to the USGA, Dr. Kenna guided the investment of millions in research funding that led to the development of new grasses, improved maintenance practices and a much better understanding of the positive impact golf courses have on our communities. He was actively involved in improving the USGA Recommendations for Putting Green Construction and he supported research that produced more than 30 new turfgrass varieties that are improving the golf experience and conserving resources at courses around the world.

“We’re delighted that Mike has received this significant honor and we’re all proud to have called him a colleague and a friend here in the Green Section,” said Dr. Matthew Pringle, managing director of the USGA Green Section, “I can’t think of a more deserving recipient.”
