Road to Pine Needles: 2021 champion of U.S. Senior Women's Open

The World Golf Hall of Famer who owns 94 worldwide victories (72 on the LPGA Tour) returns to the U.S. Women's Open after winning the 2021 U.S. Senior Women's Open last summer at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Conn. Sorenstam owns three U.S. Women's Open titles, including the 1996 championship at Pine Needles when she successfully defended her title won at The Broadmoor. Her third Women's Open triumph came in 2006 at Newport (R.I.) Country Club in an 18-hole playoff over Pat Hurst. Sorenstam owns seven other major titles, including three Chevron Championships (formery Nabisco Dinah Shore and ANA Inspiration) and three KPMG Women's PGA Championships (formerly LPGA Championship). Sorenstam won the LPGA Tour's Player of the Year eight times and was a six-time Vare Trophy recipient, given to the player with the lowest stroke average. In 2003, she was the first female to tee it up in a PGA Tour event since 1945 when she was invited to play in the Bank of America Colonia. In 2001, Sorenstam became the first female to shoot a 59 in competition en route to winning the Standard Register Ping at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix. Sorenstam represented Europe in eight Solheim Cups and captained the 2017 European side. As an amateur, Sorenstam won the 1991 NCAA individual championship as a freshman at the University of Arizona and was the runner-up to Vicki Goetze in the 1992 U.S. Women's Amateur. She also represented Sweden in two Women's World Amateur Team Championships, winning the individual title in 1992. This will be Sorenstam's 16th U.S. Women's Open start.
