Shibuno’s breakthrough moment came in the 2019 Women’s British Open, her major-championship debut. Traveling for the first time outside her native Japan, Shibuno held off American Lizette Salas by one stroke at Woburn Golf Club. Shibuno became the second female player from Japan to win a major, following Hisako Higuchi in the 1977 LPGA Championship (now KPMG Women's PGA Championship), and the first to win her major debut since Hyo-Joo Kim in the 2014 Evian Championship. All four of Shibuno’s other professional triumphs have come on the LPGA Tour of Japan. Shibuno has athletic genes as her father was a discus thrower and her mother threw the javelin.
