4:50 p.m. EDT: There is a new leader in the clubhouse as the duo of Brandon Matthews and Patrick Ross is in at 14-under 126. They recorded three consecutive birdies on Nos. 15-17. Matthews, 21, of Dupont, Pa., is an All-America player from Temple University who made the quarterfinals of the 2013 U.S. Amateur. Ross, 24, of Dunmore, Pa., used to be a college teammate of Matthews at Temple University after transferring from the University of Hartford. Based on the current scores on the course, Matthews and Ross are all but assured of earning medalist honors.
4:30 p.m. EDT: After shooting 2 over on the West Course on Saturday, Matthew Finger and Michael Korcuba needed to rally Sunday on the East Course. Rally, they did, improving by 10 strokes with an 8-under 72. The duo started the inward nine with four consecutive birdies and now sit pretty for a spot in match play.
4:25 p.m. EDT: Two sides are in the clubhouse at 12-under 128: Scott Harvey and Todd Mitchell, and Drew Allenspach and Matthew Van Zandt. Both sides competed last year at The Olympic Club, with Harvey and Mitchess losing in the semifinals, and Allenspach and Van Zandt missing match play. Harvey is the 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and Mitchell is the 2008 Mid-Amateur runner-up.
2:55 p.m. EDT: Nate Hair, 48, of Spokane, Wash., is competing in his first USGA championship, alongside partner Reid Hatley, but there is no shortage of experience on Hair's bag. His wife and caddie is 1994 U.S. Women's Amateur champion Wendy Ward, who has competed in 16 U.S. Women's Opens and won four times on the LPGA Tour.
2:25 p.m. EDT: The youngest team in the field – 15-year-olds Sean Maruyama and Clay Seeber – put on a back-nine rally to shoot a second-round 66 and give themselves a chance of qualifying for match play. The 4-under round on Winged Foot’s West Course put them at 3-under 137, which put them in a tie for 22nd with a dozen other teams when they finished. Maruyama, the son of former PGA Tour player Shigeki Maruyama, holed a 35-footer for birdie at 14 and a 15-footer for another birdie at 15. Seeber sank a 15-foot birdie putt on 16. Maruyama missed a 10-footer for birdie on 18.
“We were everywhere for the most part early in the round,” Maruyama said. “We were chipping up trying to make pars, then in the middle of the back nine we started hitting greens and giving ourselves chances."
2:05 p.m. EDT: The North Carolina side of Sherrill Britt and Greg Earnhardt advanced to the final of the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship last year, losing 7 and 5 to Nathan Smith and Todd White. But Britt, 50, and Earnhardt, 47, are not going to qualify for match play this time. Britt-Earnhardt opened with an even-par 70 on Winged Foot Golf Club’s East Course Saturday and couldn’t find any magic in Sunday’s second round of stroke play on the West Course. The team shot a 2-over 72 to finish 36 holes at 2-over 142.
2 p.m. EDT: Patrick Moore, 33, of Scottsdale, Ariz., registered the second hole-in-one of the championship and fourth in the history of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. Moore aced the par-3 sixth hole on the East with a 6-iron from 184 yards. Defending co-champion Todd White had a hole-in-one on Saturday.
1:15 p.m. EDT: Yesterday's pace-setters, Andrew Whalen and Dylan Wu, are in the clubhouse at 9-under 131. The Northwestern University teammates shot 8 under on the East Course on Saturday and 1 under Sunday on the West Course.
