Walker Cup Memories: Harris English

Harris English competed on the 2011 USA Walker Cup Team that suffered a narrow 14-12 defeat at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland. English produced a pair of singles victories, defeating Jack Senior, 2 and 1, on Saturday, and James Byrne by the same score on Sunday. He lost both of his foursomes (alternate-shot) matches with teammate Peter Uihlein.

What did playing in the Walker Cup mean to you?

It was the best experience of my life. That was a goal of mine, really since I saw the Walker Cup when I was 11 years old at Ocean Forest (Golf Club, in Sea Island, Ga.) in 2001. Ever since then I wanted to play in that event. It was everything I thought it would be, playing for my country. It was amazing.

Why did you go to the Walker Cup at such a young age?

I really wanted to go. It was about three hours from our house. Seeing guys like Lucas Glover, Luke Donald, DJ Trahan ... a lot of guys I'm seeing out here. I thought it would be cool to see, and it was. At an early age I knew that's what I wanted to do, too.

What did you learn that week?

I saw how special it was, and I know that most of the best players have played in the Walker Cup and had that experience, and it really helps you go grow as a golfer and as a person. I wish we could have won … but I wouldn't trade that overall experience for anything. I think you learn a lot whether you win or lose. It's about the camaraderie and playing for your teammates and your captain and your country and just doing the best you can in those circumstances.
