Earlier this year, the Pinehurst Village Council voted unanimously to approve the rezoning proposal submitted by the USGA for Golf House Pinehurst, a satellite headquarters that will give the USGA a permanent presence in the North Carolina Sandhills. The project centers on a pair of two-story buildings totalling approximately 40,000 square feet that will house a welcome center open to the public, a new state-of-the-art equipment standards test center and a small amount of office space.

The plan for Golf House Pinehurst was announced in September 2020 and represents a commitment by the USGA to a place that is often referred to as the home of American golf, with roots that date back nearly as far as the USGA itself. The designs for the buildings, conceived by Clearscapes, a Raleigh, N.C.-based architecture firm, evoke the architectural heritage of Pinehurst and are designed to blend seamlessly within the community and surrounding natural environment. Golf House Pinehurst is planned for a parcel of land adjacent to the entrance to Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, home of the famed Pinehurst No. 2, a three-time U.S. Open host that will see that championship as well as other USGA events return in future years.

More than one million people visit Pinehurst each year, a large percentage of them to play golf and soak in the atmosphere of a place where the game is a part of the community fabric. The Welcome Center and Museum planned for Golf House Pinehurst will be an engaging place for visitors to learn more about the USGA and the game's history through video and photo presentations, artifacts and special events.

“We know that locating some of our mission-critical activities here in Pinehurst will make them better and make them stronger, because this is a community whose heart and soul are connected to the game,” said Rand Jerris, the USGA's senior managing director of public services.

Groundbreaking for Golf House Pinehurst is scheduled for late spring 2022. The plan submitted to the State of North Carolina calls for a December 2023 completion, meaning the facility would be fully operational ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst No. 2.
