The short film "More Than A Game" chronicles the historical significance of Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio.

The USGA Museum was among 11 institutions to win 2014 Communication Awards at the recent International Sports Heritage Association annual conference in Nashville, Tenn.

During the Evening of Champions dinner on Oct. 28 at the Bridgestone Arena, the USGA Museum was honored for its short film, “More Than a Game,” which details the Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio, built by African-American William Powell. The legacy of the public course, the only one in the United States designed, built, owned and managed by an African American, continues through Powell’s children. His daughter, Renee Powell, was the second African-American to compete on the LPGA Tour and serves as the head golf professional at Clearview, while his son, Larry, is the club’s superintendent.

The film debuted in February with the opening of the USGA Museum’s exhibit, also titled “More Than A Game,” which celebrates the historical importance of African-American golf clubs and their contributions to the expansion and development of golf in the United States. The film was produced by Dan Levinson of Moxie Pictures.

“It was an honor for the USGA Museum to be recognized by the International Sports Heritage Association,” said the USGA’s Susan Wasser, who was on hand to receive the award on behalf of the Museum. “The 2014 Communication Award is another validation that the USGA continues to strive to create and share important and compelling stories within the framework of golf history.”
