Herbie Aikens, 31, of Pembroke, Mass., started his own electrical business more than a decade ago. His first project was to do a single electrical outlet was for $267. Now his company does more than $8 million in business annually and has 30 employees. An avid Celtics fan, he’s had floor seats for home games the last five years. This is his third consecutive year playing in the U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Chelso Barrett, 18, of Keene, N.H., was the runner-up at the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur. Barrett lost to Jordan Spieth, 6 and 5, at Gold Mountain G.C. (Olympic Course). Barrett’s family owns Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, N.H.
Zachary Blair, 21, of Ogden, Utah, won the 2011 Salt Lake City Amateur and 2009 Utah State Amateur. He was also runner-up at the 2011 Sahalee Players Championship.
Mark Buchholz, 27, of Cumming, Ga., has only been playing golf for four years. His first child, a daughter, is due in September. Buchholz was ranked in college 4,000 in world in Halo out of more than 33 million players.
John Burke, 17, of Sacramento, Calif., participated in The First Tee of Greater Sacramento. Burke is also a former youth baseball standout who tied the all-time pitching wins record at the 2007 Cal Ripken World Series.
Owen Butler, 28, of Fitchburg, Wis., is a childhood leukemia survivor. He has a five-month-old son, Oliver.
Mason Casper, 25, of Linden, Utah, is the grandson of two-time U.S. Open champion Billy Casper. In his first collegiate season at Utah Valley University, Casper had six top-five finishes.
Alexander Chiarella, 18, of Pukalani, Hawaii, had four surgeries on parts of his digestive system and was the 2011 Hawaii State Junior Golfer of the Year.
Mario Clemens, 22, of Dallas, Texas, won the 2013 Mexican Amateur, where he broke the tournament scoring record by shooting 19 under par.
Mark Cusic, 34, of California, Md., comes from a large family – he is one of 32 grandchildren.
Chris Davis, 26, of Glendora, Calif., chipped in for eagle on the final hole of qualifying to make the field for the 2012 APL.
Jim Dufficy, 44, of Tinton Falls, N.J., is an ironworker for a living. He is a member of New York's Local 40.
James Erkenbeck, 23, of San Diego, Calif., was the stroke-play medalist at the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links, shooting rounds of 68 and 67 at Soldier Hollow.
Cory Gladstone, 36, of San Diego, Calif., is a retired mortgage banker. He played golf in high school, took a 15-year break from the game, and then picked it up again full-time in November 2010.
Talor Gooch, 21, of Midwest City, Okla., won the 2001 U.S. Kids World Championship at the age of 9. He will be a senior on the Oklahoma State golf team and was voted to the All Big-12 Conference team in 2012.
Christopher Good, 21, of Denver, Colo., graduated from the University of Denver Magna Cum Laude in just three years.
David Griffin, 23, of Baton Rouge, La., broke the growth plate in his right arm when he was 3 years old. The injury caused his right arm and hand to be slighter smaller than his left arm and hand. He was also a member of the The First Tee in Decatur.
Tommy Hingham, 23, of Provo, Utah, took a two-year hiatus from golf to serve on a Church Mission in Australia. Hingham also beat his 16-year-old brother, Kiefer, 6 and 5 in the final match of the Idaho State Match Play Championship, which he has now won three times. Growing up, Hingham took tap dance classes for 11 years.
Sam Horsfield, 16, of Davenport, Fla., won the Florida State Amateur by 11 strokes in 2013. He once played in a putting competition with Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. Poulter has mentioned Horsfield in several of his Tweets.
Chris Igawa, 33, of Hilo, Hawaii, is a dentist playing in his fifth APL.
Ricky Jones, 41, of Thomaston, Maine, competed in the Reebok Crossfit Games in March 2013 and is competing in his 10th USGA championship.
Trent Karlik, 34, of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a high school computer teacher. He has also played with Arnold Palmer at The King’s home course, Latrobe Country Club. Karlik shot a 60 in competition this spring and has a dog named Bogey.
Michael Kim, 19, of Del Mar, Calif., was the low amateur at the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club. Kim shot rounds of 73-70-71-76 to finish tied for 17th. He reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 APL.
Tyler Klava, 21, from Pace, Fla., has been wearing braces for nearly 11 years.
Sean Knapp, 51, of Oakmont, Pa., played in 2013 U.S. Senior Open, missing the cut with rounds of 72-76. Knapp withdrew from the 2012 APL because of a conflict with U.S. Senior Open, in which he was paired with Tom Watson in the third round. Knapp also lost to Tiger Woods in 1995 U.S. Amateur. He was a semi-finalist in the 2008 and 2010 U.S. Mid-Amateur and member of winning USGA State Team Championship from Pennsylvania in 2009 and 2012. Knapp was the best man in four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Nathan Smith's wedding. He was also an All-State basketball player in Pennsylvania in 1980.
Bret Lawrence, 37, of Bethlehem, Conn., has visited all 50 states. His final state to cross off the list was Hawaii in 2003.
Jooho Lee, 17, of Canada, has made 12 holes-in-one.
Sangsoo Lee, 45, of Ridgefield, N.J., didn’t start playing golf until he was 35.
Andrew McCain, 19, of New Port Richie, Fla., was a downhill ski racer. His younger brother, Matthew, has Down syndrome and Andrew credits Matthew as being a real inspiration to him. Andrew has also played with Lee Janzen and lived in Brisbane Australia for more than three years.
Xander McDonald-Smith, 20, of Rockaway Park, N.Y., played with Nick Price in the First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. McDonald-Smith is also a First Tee instructor.
John Oda, 17, of Honolulu, Hawaii, broke the Hawaii State Amateur Championship 36-hole record by six strokes in 2013. He played in the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in 2012, missing the cut with rounds of 73-73. Oda also plays the ukulele.
Cameron Peck, 22, of Olympia, Wash., is the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur champion.
Mayson Petty, 38, of Charlotte, N.C., is playing in his first USGA championship since the 1995 U.S. Amateur, a span of 18 years.
GlennPrzybylski, 46, of Frankfort, Ill., met his wife (and caddie in 2013 APL) on a blind date 16 years ago. He broke his collarbone in high school playing softball and once the bone healed, he increased his driving distance by 20 yards. This will be his 12th USGA Championship.
Garrett Rank, 25, of Canada, works as a minor league hockey referee during the winter. He is a cancer survivor. Rank finished runner-up to Nathan Smith in the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Alberto Sanchez, 19, of Nogales, Ariz., qualified for the 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club and played a practice round with Phil Mickelson, a fellow Arizona State Sun Devil.
Scott Sheldon, 20, of Omaha, Neb., was a member of his high school hockey team that won the Nebraska State Hockey Championship. Sheldon was selected First Team All-State in hockey during senior season.
David Shields, 36, of Erdenheim, Pa., played Division I tennis at St. Joseph's University and fished professionally after college.
Mark Sider, 33, of Highland Park, Ill., played golf with Michael Jordan for 27 holes. Sider shot a 5-under 31 on the third nine, but could not play last nine because it was Rosh Hashanah and the course was closing at 4 p.m. He also launched an all-natural, coconut-water based hydration-sports drink company in 2010 with his brother called Greater > Than.
Sam Straka, 20, of Valdosta, Ga., was raised in Austria and moved to the United States at age 14. Straka has a twin brother, Sepp, who also plays golf at the University of Georgia. Sepp competed in the 2012 APL.
Nick Tremps, 20, of Williamsburg, Va., broke his arm playing basketball when he was 12 years old and, with the cast on, won two golf tournaments.
Jon Veneziano, 42, of Mount Dora, Fla., was a semifinalist in the 1988 U.S. Junior Amateur and was a member of the Florida squad that finished runner-up in the 2010 USGA State Team Championship. Veneziano shot 59 in a 2002 tournament at Country Club of Mount Dora (Fla.) and was elected into the University of Hartford Athletics Hall of Fame.
