Savannah, Ga. – When people think of Habitat for Humanity, they usually think of houses- golf leader boards seldom come to mind. But in the case of Habitat Savannah, the volunteers who typically build simple homes throughout our community spent close to 300 hours building the leader board for the USGA Women’s State Team Championship held at The Landings Oct. 4-6. These hours were in addition to the regular volunteer hours this group of Landings residents spends on Habitat’s construction sites. The Leader Board Twelve crew included: Bruce Bissett, Stan Plonchak, Bob Longueira, George DeSola, Wells Nutt, Roger Nord, Mark Piven, Mark Davis, Tom Rood, Terry Overton, Steele King, and Bob Fischer.
The original USGA design specifications for this championship called for a temporary structure which would be removed at the close of the tournament; however, The Landings Club wanted to pursue the option of constructing a more permanent structure adjacent to the Plantation Clubhouse. Landings Club committee overseeing the project decided to approach Habitat Savannah with the idea of building a scoreboard. It was the perfect partnership as Habitat knows how to build stable, lasting structures, and most importantly, it would be built by Landings residents who had a passion and vision for what the final leader board should look like.
The finished scoreboard, which meets USGA design specifications as well as Landings Club architectural design standards, stands at 36 feet wide by 8 feet high- not including the roof. The scoreboard was modified so that the siding and trim complemented the existing clubhouse. The shingled roof structure is built on a concrete slab and is constructed with fiber cement and composite material.
The Landings Club paid the cost of materials for the project with the volunteer labor valued at an estimated $9,000. The USGA Women’s State Team Championship:
The USGA Women’s State Team Championship is a national USGA championship, where each state, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico sends three golfers to compete in a 54-hole competition.
