Virginia Beach, Va. – Brenda Pictor’s two-day total of 2-over 146 earned her medalist honors at the 2011 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, being conducted at 6,187-yard, par-72 Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach, Va.
Following an extended weather delay on Saturday, the second round of stroke-play qualifying was completed Monday afternoon.
Pictor, 56, of Marietta, Ga., was among 42 players who finished their second rounds on Sunday. For Pictor, who did not begin her first round in Saturday’s storm, the delay meant 36 grueling holes of golf amid 30 mile-per-hour gusts and periodic bursts of rain.
It’s a long day and I’m a senior, if you will, said Pictor, a commercial realtor who advanced to the round of 16 at last week’s USGA Senior Women’s Amateur. That’s a long walk. When you’re playing well, you’ve always got a little more adrenaline, a little more energy.
Pictor’s steady opening round of even-par 72 set her atop the leader board going into Sunday afternoon. However, her second round did not start out as well as her first, with three bogeys over her first seven holes dropping her into an early deficit.
I just stayed in the moment and didn’t get ahead of myself, said Pictor, the runner-up at the 2011 North & South Senior Women’s Amateur. If I made bogey, I didn’t worry about it because conditions were tough.
The conditions certainly did not seem to get under her skin. Pictor recorded three birdies to go with two bogeys over her final nine holes, including an 80-yard approach to the par-5 18th that she stuck to 1 foot for birdie.
It was lot of fun to be able to get that last one to get (my inward nine) back under par, said Pictor, who credited her husband/caddie, Brad, with keeping her calm throughout the demanding test.
Leigh Klasse, 51, of St. Anthony, Minn., played her entire second round on Monday, with sunny conditions that were diametrically opposed to Saturday’s gloom. While she was in contention for her second USGA stroke-play medal following her first-round 74, Klasse, who works in the life insurance industry, was more than content with her 4-over 148.
I was just thinking about making pars, said Klasse, who won the stroke-play medal at the 2010 Senior Women’s Amateur. I had some good chances for birdies, but I didn’t make anything. Hopefully I’m saving them for this afternoon.
Tara Joy-Connelly, 38, of Pembroke, Mass., shot consecutive rounds of 38-36—74 to tie with Klasse for second. Her two birdies on the par-4, 394-yard 17th were the only two in stroke play on the hole, which played as the third hardest on the course.
Apparently I’m the only one who likes No. 17, said Joy-Connelly, a reinstated amateur who has represented her home state in six USGA Women’s State Team Championships. That hole just sets up nicely for my eye, I guess.
Three players carded 5-over 149 to tie for fourth: Dawn Woodard, 37, of Greer, S.C.; Jennifer Lucas, 30, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and 1998 Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Virginia Grimes, 47, of Meridian, Miss.
Defending champion Meghan Stasi, 33, of Oakland Park, Fla., advanced with a 10-over 154 and continued her bid for a record fourth Women’s Mid-Amateur title. Also advancing was 2010 runner-up and Virginia Beach native Carol Robertson, 28, who carded an 8-over 152. Robertson will immediately face a tough test, as she will meet 2010 Senior Women’s Amateur champion Mina Hardin, 51, of Fort Worth, Texas, in the first round of match play.
Three other Women’s Mid-Amateur champions advanced to match play: Martha Leach, 49, of Hebron, Ky. (8-over 152); Ellen Port, 49, of St. Louis, Mo. (17-over 161); and Corey Weworski, 49, of Carlsbad, Calif. (10-over 160).
Also advancing were the immediate past and future USA Curtis Cup Team captains. Noreen Mohler, 57, of Bethlehem, Pa., directed the 2010 USA Team to victory at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., while Patricia Cornett, 57, of Mills Valley, Calif., will lead the 2012 squad at The Nairn Golf Club in Scotland. Cornett was the runner-up at the inaugural Women’s Mid-Amateur in 1987.
Carolyn Creekmore, 50, of Dallas, Texas, the 2004 Senior Women’s Amateur champion, survived a six-person playoff for the final match-play berth and will face Pictor in the first round.
Notables to miss the cut were past Women’s Mid-Amateur champions Amber Marsh Elliott, who was eliminated in the playoff, and Martha Lang, the chairman of the USGA’s Women’s Committee.
The first round of match play is scheduled for Monday afternoon. The second and third rounds will be played Tuesday. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played Wednesday and the 18-hole championship final will be played Thursday.
The U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championship conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
