Bandon, Ore. – Cheyenne Woods captured medalist honors with a 1-under-par 141 at the 2011 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. The second round of qualifying was conducted at the 6,095-yard, par-71 Bandon Trails at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
Woods, 20, of Phoenix, Ariz., took advantage of Tuesday’s temperate conditions at Bandon Trails. After Monday’s vicious wind and rain, Tuesday afternoon’s sun and gentle breezes provided Woods with the perfect opportunity to almost run away from the field. She finished four strokes ahead of her nearest competitor after carding a 2-under 69.
Today I was really steady. I didn’t have any bogeys until 17, said Woods, the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference champion. Surprisingly I wasn’t hitting it as well as yesterday, but my misses were on the green since the greens are so big.
Woods came into the championship working on her swing mechanics with coach Mike LaBauve. With the changes in her swing affecting her preparation, Woods had to rely on her solid putting to make up the difference.
My lag putting is what saved me, she said. I didn’t have a par putt over 3 feet. My putting was really good, but my hitting was just a little off. But I managed to scramble my way through.
In taking medalist honors, Woods joined her uncle, Tiger Woods, as a USGA championship medalist. Tiger Woods was the medalist at the 1991 and 1992 U.S. Junior Amateur Championships and the 1996 U.S. Amateur Championship, all of which he went on to win.
Woods did admit to thinking about the possibility of garnering her first USGA medal.
Going into today, I definitely was [thinking about medalist], said Woods. That was something that was on my mind going through the round. I really wanted to take advantage of every shot, even if I’d already been into match play since I played really well yesterday.
I wanted to make every birdie I could or save every par just because I wanted that medalist title.
Emilie Burger, 20, of Hoschton, Ga., joined Woods with a 2-under round Tuesday to finish second at 3-over-par 145. Following Burger at 4-over 146 are 2011 U.S. Women’s Open qualifier Christine Wolf, 22, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Lee Lopez, 21, of Whittier, Calif. Lopez is a member of the UCLA team that won the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship.
Defending champion Emily Tubert struggled through her second round, following Monday’s 2-over 73 with a 6-over 77 to finish eight strokes over par at 150. Tubert was upbeat about her day, despite a round that included five bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-4 13th hole.
I definitely learned a lot today about myself and about this golf course, said Tubert, who won three collegiate tournaments during her stellar freshman season at the University of Arkansas. I’ll just look forward to continuing the championship.
Scotland’s Sally Watson, who paced the morning-wave players with a 6-over 148, is joined by Massachusetts native Brittany Altomare and Lisa McCloskey. McCloskey, a 19-year-old from Houston, Texas, had the round of the day, bouncing back from a nine-over-par 80 on Monday with a 3-under 68, the lowest round of the championship.
First-round leader Kelsey Vines, who admitted to getting the best of the weather on Monday, did not find the groove on Tuesday. The 20-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, struggled through her round, making four bogeys and two double bogeys en route to a 7-over 78. However, her cumulative 7-over 149 easily put her through into Wednesday’s first round of match play.
Among the other notables to advance to match play are 2010 USA Curtis Cup Team members Stephanie Kono and Tiffany Lua, and another 2011 U.S. Women’s Open qualifier, Mariel Galdiano.
The
2011 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links continues Wednesday with the first round
of match play at the 6,098-yard, par-71 Old Macdonald. The second and third
rounds will be played Thursday at Bandon Trails. The quarterfinal and semifinal
matches are on Friday, and the 36-hole championship final will be played
Saturday. The final three rounds will all be conducted at Old Macdonald.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 13 championships conducted
annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for
amateurs.
