Far Hills, N.J. – The United States Golf Association has accepted a record 1,049 entries for the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, which will be played Aug. 9-15 at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club.
It is the first time the USGA has received more than 1,000 entries for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. The previous record of 969 entries was set in 2006.
It is also the third USGA championship for females to set a record for entries in 2010. Previously, both the U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Girls’ Junior set new highs for entries received. Each of the three championships received more than 1,000 entries.
We are very pleased to receive a record number of entries for another USGA championship, said Barbara Douglas, chairman of the USGA Women’s Committee. We believe it is a sign of the strength and importance of our national championships.
The assistance we have received from other organizations, such as state, regional and junior golf associations, has played a significant role in the surge in entries, said Douglas. We are so grateful for the gracious support of our efforts.
Thirty-eight players are currently fully exempt into the championship. Twenty players became fully exempt when they qualified for the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open.
The remainder of the field of 156 players will be filled via sectional qualifying at 18 sites between July 6-21. A sectional qualifier will be played at Sapona Country Club in Lexington, N.C., on July 12.
