Notre Dame, Ind. – Ariya Jutanugarn, 14, of Thailand, added a 4-under-par 67 on Tuesday to her opening 68 for a 36-hole total of 7-under 135 to capture stroke-play medalist honors by two strokes in the 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at the 6,092-yard, par-71 Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame.
Jutanugarn, playing in the afternoon, passed Argentina's Martina Gavier, who finished earlier on Tuesday with a 68 for a 137 total.
Lizette Salas of Azusa, Calif., was third low qualifier with 67-71—138, while Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass., added a 70 to finish fourth at 139.
The low 64 scorers advanced to match play, which begins on Wednesday. The cut for match play came at 10-over 152, with an 8-for-3 playoff held late Tuesday afternoon to determine the final spots.
Jutanugarn’s score of 135 ties the record lowest score by a WAPL medalist, set by Brittany Lang in 2004 at Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Va.
Jutanugarn, who has partially completed ninth grade, hits drives as long as 270 yards. The 2009 U.S. Girls' Junior quarterfinalist made six birdies, most notably on the 14th, 17th and 18th holes, all on putts of less than 6 feet.
Everything was perfect, said Jutanugarn. My irons were very good. My driver was very good and my putts were very good. I am proud.
Jutanugarn’s sister Moriya, 15, also qualified for match play with scores of 70-75—145. The Jutanugarn family is on an odyssey of golf competitions in the United States. The family sold their house and car to make the trip possible. They still own a small golf shop in Bangkok.
Ariya Jutanugarn is playing in her fifth straight U.S. golf event, but USGA championships are nothing new. In the 2009 U.S. Girls’ Junior, at the age of 13, she upset defending champion Alexis Thompson, 2 and 1, and then lost in the quarterfinals.
She has qualified for next month’s U.S. Women’s Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Moriya will also attempt to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Girls’ Junior. Ariya is currently exempt for both events by virtue of qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open. Ariya also has previously played in two LPGA Tour events in Thailand, one in 2007 when she was 11.
She finished nine over par, her father, Somboon Jutanugarn, said proudly.
This week, he is caddying for his daughter for the first time, pulling a cart. Her mother, Narumon Jutanugarn, 41, is pulling Moriya’s clubs on a cart.
I am very tired, said Somboon, 55, pointing at his legs. He was Ariya’s first instructor when she began playing golf at the age of five. A number of professionals in Thailand have since given her lessons on a voluntary basis. Most recently, she has been taught by a professional in Thailand she knows only by his first name, Rukchai.
Meanwhile, the Argentina-born Gavier, a senior-to-be at Kent State, was inspired by her home country's soccer performance in the World Cup in South Africa. Argentina blanked Greece on Tuesday, 2-0, to advance to the knockout round.
I was inspired today, said Gavier after recording the second lowest 36-hole total.
Gavier may also be the player who made the most grueling trip to get here. She arrived in Notre Dame on Saturday after a 26-hour flight from Argentina that took her through Chile, Miami, Charlotte and Cleveland. After a layover, she flew to Indiana.
First-round leader Kimberly Kim, Hilo, Hawaii, the WAPL runner-up in 2006 and 2009 as well as the youngest champion in U.S. Women's Amateur history (14 in 2006), struggled to a 78 following a first-round 66. The two-time USA Curtis Cupper qualified for match play with a 2-over 144 total. Kim's fellow 2010 USA Curtis Cup teammate, Stephanie Kono of Honolulu, Hawaii, also shot 78 after an opening round of 67. The UCLA All-American also easily advanced to match play.
Kim went four over par in her opening four holes. After I went bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, I thought, ‘Whoa, what’s happening here?’ " Kim said. It was a little rougher today but I’m just glad I made the cut. Now I’m on to match play.
The Women’s Amateur Public Links continues through Saturday's 36-hole championship match.
