USGA championships: This will be the first USGA championship for the club and the first time the Men’s State Team Championship will be contested in the Golden State. California now joins Minnesota as the only states to have conducted all 13 national championships, a Walker Cup, Curtis Cup and State Team Championship. California has yet to host a Women’s State Team Championship, while Minnesota had both men’s and women’s events in 2001.
Tee time: Members never have to make a starting time at Mayacama and it’s also a walking-only course, although members who are 65 and older or have a prescribed medical conditon are permitted to use carts.
Location, location: Mayacama is located 65 miles north of San Francisco in the heart of wine country. Bodega Bay on the scenic Pacific Coast is 28 miles to the west. Featured non-golfing activities include fishing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, cycling and hot-air ballooning. During construction, the club was responsible for mitigating wetland areas displaced by the golf course and it now monitors and manages more than 3 acres of both naturally occurring and created wetlands.
Deluxe amenities: The club features tennis and swim facilities as well as a European spa, hidden hiking trails and a 3,000-square foot private wine cellar, where each member has a storage locker for his/her wines. In fact, members share a regular locker for golf, but have their own wine locker in what the club calls the "wine cave."
Vinter's heaven: Mayacama has 31 Vinter Members, who in exchange for reduced membership fees, they agree to host winemaker dinners and tastings and provide a barrel of the latest vintage at cost. Vinter Members need to produce wines scoring north of 92 points from Robert Parker or Wine Spectator to qualify.
Salute to Snoopy: Mayacama was built on the former estate of Peanuts comic strip creator Charles M. Schulz, who died in 2000 following complications from colon cancer. Schulz was an avid golfer and often depicted golf scenes for Snoopy and his Peanuts pals.
Environmentally friendly: In 2009, the club embarked on its certification into the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System and received its certification in the spring of 2009. The club created bluebird and owl boxes, with members' children finishing the construction.
Quotable: You start with a great piece of property, one that allowed us the opportunity to set a golf course in there, naturally, to create a wonderful golf experience. The whole experience is secluded and private. The club's location and its surrounds combine to make it very private and unique.
