What is the USGA Digital Learning Tool?

  • This digital, online course has been created based on feedback from thousands of coaches and players and is powered by adaptive-learning technology. This means that each player’s experience is personalized to meet his or her specific needs and allows players to progress based on their own knowledge and experience levels.  

How long should the course take to complete?

  • The time spent in the course will vary between individuals. Players who already have a good understanding of the new Rules will be able to complete this course in 45-60 minutes, while others may take up to 2 hours or more. More importantly, you can be confident that once players have completed this course, each will have demonstrated his or her complete understanding of the course content.

Is any preparation needed before starting the course?

  • No preparation is needed before starting the course. The course is designed to teach players what he or she doesn’t know.

Should the course be completed in one sitting?

  • That’s up to you! Your path through the course is unique to you. You can complete the course in one sitting or break it up into smaller sittings.

This there a cost to the USGA Digital Learning Tool?

  • This is a free course to coaches and players.

For Coaches

How do I give my players access to the course?

  • You first need invite them to register, and to do this you will need each player’s e-mail address. To invite them, click on the course on the screen after logging in. Then click Roster on the left side menu and then click Invite Learners. Enter the email addresses for the players you want to invite and separate them with a comma. If you want to personalize the email they will receive, edit is as necessary. Then click Invite Leaners in the bottom left corner. This will send each player an e-mail with a link that will let them register for the course.

How can I remove players from my course?

  • Click on Roster on the left side menu to show the players registered. Find the player you want to drop and click on the 3-dot icon in the far right column. Select Drop and then OK from the popup confirming you want to drop the player.

Where can I check my players’ progress?

  • Click on Reports on the left side menu and then click on your course below Adaptive Report.

I coach both a Men’s and Women’s team. Do I need two accounts?

  • No. You will have a single account to use for both teams.

Can my assistant coach take the course?

  • Yes. You can add you assistant coach to the course using the same process of adding players.

Can I take the course myself?

  • Yes, you can take the course through your account. Click on Course on the left side menu. Then click the arrow next to the course and click on 2019 Rules of Golf – Essentials for Collegiate Golfers to launch the course.

If I know a college coach who did not receive access to this tool, what should they do?

  • The college coach can contact the USGA Rules team at or (908)326-1850 to request access to the tool.

If I haven’t found the answer to my question here, what should I do?

  • You can contact the USGA Rules team at or (908)326-1850 with any question.

For Players

How do I register for my course?

  • You will receive an email inviting you to the course from your coach. Click the link in the email and then follow the steps.

How to do access my course after registering?

  • After registering, you will receive a confirmation email that your account has been set up. The email will have the link for the course, which is what you will use to access the course in the future.  

Where can I check my progress?

  • Click on Reports in the menu on the left-side of the course. This will show your current progress in the course.

Do I need to save my progress saved?

  • No, your progress is automatically saved as you move through the course.

Do I have to complete the course in a specific order?

  • No, the course can be completed in any order. You can pick where to start!

How can I leave feedback for a probe or resource that may be confusing or incorrect?

  • For probes, there is a Challenge button and for resources, a Give Feedback button. If you think a probe or resources is incorrect or confusing, simply click on the button and send us your thoughts.


Mobile Users


Can I use the Digital Learning Tool on my mobile device?

  • Yes. While the most user-friendly experience occurs when using the course on a laptop or desktop computer, the course can be accessed on a mobile or table device. Please read through the questions below for more information on using the Tool on a mobile device.

How can I use this on my mobile or tablet device?

  • Before using the course on mobile or a table, download the LearnSmart Suite app, which is free of charge. Then login to the course in a browser window at The browser will automatically prompt the player to launch the LearnSmart Suite app and he or she can begin learning the new Rules. Players should not try to login to the LearnSmart Suite app directly.

Where do I get the LearnSmart Suite app?

  • The app can be downloaded from either the Apple App Store (click here) or Google Play (click here).

What if I haven’t downloaded the LearnSmart Suite app?

  • If the app is not downloaded, players will receive an error message (e.g., “Safari cannot open the page because the address is invalid.”). This is expected for mobile users who have not already downloaded the LearnSmart Suite app. This page also displays a message that reads “Need the app? Get it here.” Your players just need to click “here” to be redirected to the App Store or Google Play to download the app.

Can I log in directly through the LearnSmart app?

  • No. You need to login through Connect2 on a browser window and then launch the app. You need to follow that process whether it’s the first or tenth time you’re accessing the course via mobile or a tablet.  


How do I reset my password?

  • Click on Lost Password on the login page. Then enter your email and follow the steps to reset your password.

What are the optimal operating systems and browsers for the course?

  • We recommend using Google Chrome.
