A date change has been announced for the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, which will be held at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa. The championship dates will be one week earlier than originally planned to avoid conflict with two other USGA championships and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, which are also being conducted in August. The new dates for the championship are Aug. 1-7, 2016.
Since 2012, the U.S. Women’s Amateur has ended on the second Sunday in August. However, the congested sports schedule for August 2016 necessitated the shift in championship dates.
“August 2016 is a very exciting and busy month for worldwide sports, not just on the USGA calendar,” said Diana Murphy, USGA vice president and chairman of the Championship Committee. “Moving the U.S. Women’s Amateur will allow us to manage the logistics of conducting three championships in three weeks while still celebrating the international excitement that always comes during an Olympic year.”
The 2016 Summer Olympics, the first since 1904 to include golf, will be held Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The U.S. Senior Open will be conducted Aug. 11-14 at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, while the U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
The date change for the U.S. Women’s Amateur will only affect the 2016 championship. The previously announced 2017 and 2018 championships at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif., and at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn., respectively, will be conducted as scheduled, Aug. 7-13 in 2017 and Aug. 6-12 in 2018.
