Greening Up

Posted: 5/27/2009

We've had a problem with a few of our greens over the last couple of years, and our superintendent has recommended removing trees to improve sunlight penetration. Does this make sense, and how much could it possibly help? The trees have been there for a long time, and we have never had problems in the past.

Most grasses need full sunlight to grow well. If the greens are heavily shaded or receive poor air circulation because of trees, selective removal could make an enormous difference in turf health. Tree growth over a period of a few years may not be very significant, but add it up over 10, 20 or more years and the negative impact on turf growth can be significant.
