Support Patriot Golf Day, Sept. 4-7
The United States Golf Association and the PGA of America have partnered with the Folds of Honor Foundation to host the third annual Patriot Golf Day, which will be held on Sept. 4-7, 2009. Patriot Golf Day, established by Major Dan Rooney, a PGA professional, USGA member and F-16 pilot in the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, is a nationwide campaign that benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation.
On Labor Day weekend, participating public golf courses nationwide will request a minimum of $1 for each green fee they process. Private facilities will solicit contributions from their members. These donations will go to the Folds of Honor Foundation (FoldsofHonor.org), which provides educational scholarships to families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty.
The inaugural Patriot Golf Day in 2007 resulted in donations of more than $1.1 million from more than 3,200 golf facilities. Last year, contributions of approximately $2 million were received from more than 3,800 golf facilities nationwide. In the last two years, more than 550 educational scholarships have been awarded through the Folds of Honor Foundation.
Several universities have pledged a number of full tuition scholarships to Folds of Honor Foundation. This money will be earmarked for students who qualify for assistance through the foundation. Those universities include Grand Valley State University, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Tulsa. The USGA and PGA of America support the program by utilizing various communication vehicles with their membership to help drive participation both by consumers, PGA Members and USGA Member Clubs.
Participating golf facilities can be found at PlayGolfAmerica.com. Individuals interested in contributing to the Folds of Honor Foundation, and those applying for scholarships should visit FoldsofHonor.org.
