NBC's 2008 U.S. Open Broadcast Earns Sports Emmy Award
 April 29, 2009
NBC Sports has earned a Sports Emmy ® Award for its coverage of the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in the category of Outstanding Live Sports Special, besting Super Bowl XLII (FOX), the Daytona 500 (FOX), Wimbledon (NBC) and the X Games (ESPN). The Emmy for Outstanding Live Sports Special was one of nine Sports Emmys that NBC captured at the 30th Sports Emmy Awards, presented at the Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center located in the Time Warner Center in New York City. In addition, Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Winners in 32 categories, including sports documentary, studio show, play-by-play personality and studio analyst, were honored. The Sports Emmy Award recipients were chosen by a blue ribbon panel of their peers from more than 750 entries. The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast throughout the 2008 calendar year.
This was the second national award that last summer's U.S. Open Championship has captured, after Sports Travel Magazine named it the 2008 Sports Event of the Year in November.
The 2008 U.S. Open Championship has also been nominated by the Sports Business Journal as the 2008 Sports Event of the Year, with the winner to be announced at the Sports Business Awards in New York City on May 28. In that category, the U.S. Open is up against the Daytona 500, the NHL Winter Classic, the MLB All-Star Game, and the NBA All-Star Game.
