Rains Winner of Robert Breitbard Award

San Diego - The Robert Breitbard Award, established in 1998 by the San Diego International Sports Council to recognize members of the community who have furthered the mission of the SDISC, announced today Cameron Jay Rains is the 2008 honoree.

Previous recipients of the award include, Bob Breitbard in the inaugural year, Ron Fowler, Herb Klein, Bob Payne, John Reid, Alex Spanos, John Moores, Malin Burnham, Steve Horrell and last year's recipient Jay Jeffcoat.

"Jay was the driving force behind bringing the U.S. Open ... to our community and its impact will be felt for decades. Rain's vision embraced the importance of integrating sports and business to enhance our local economy," said Dave Stecher, Chairman of the San Diego International Sports Council. "We welcome Jay as the newest winner of this prestigious award and joining elite company."

Rains is a partner and co-chair of the Corporate and Securities Practice Group at DLA Piper, formerly known as Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich. He has been the advisor in numerous venture financings, public offerings and mergers and acquisitions involving emerging growth, life sciences and technology companies, and counts Qualcomm, Invitrogen, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Jack in the Box and Jamba Juice among his publicly held clients.

Rains is a Vice President of the United States Golf Association, and serves on various USGA committees, including the Executive Committee, and chairs the Audit, Museum and Library, Bob Jones Award, and Equipment Standards Committees. He also served as General Co-chairman of the 2008 U.S. Open with Rich Gillette, which was held at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.

The Award is named in honor of one of the Sports Council's 10 founding members, Bob Breitbard, who in 1960, had the vision to establish an organization (then known as Greater San Diego Sports Association) that would bring sporting events and teams to our community.
