Vance House For Sale

April 20, 2007

Most people who have visited the United States Golf Association in Far Hills, N.J., or have seen pictures of the Association's headquarters known as Golf House, recognize the Georgian Colonial mansion that houses the Museum, replete with some of finest public collections of golf memorabilia, equipment and artwork. Currently that facility is undergoing a major renovation and expansion to create the Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History.

But just a 5-iron shot away from the construction site sits another piece of property that isn't quite as well known or photographed.  Built circa 1920 by renowned architect John Russell Pope (the same man who designed Golf House), this property known as the Vance House was built as a stable complex for the original owners of a single estate encompassing both properties. It was later converted into a private residence.  The Vance House, which sits on 14.6 acres, features an oversized living room and garage apartment. Its grounds feature landscapes that remain true to an original plan created by Ferrucio Vitale, who gained recognition for his designs for private estates in some of the more affluent neighborhoods of that era.

The eight-bedroom, five-bath home has housed several prominent families, including Cyrus Vance, the former Secretary of State under U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The property is currently offered for sale by the USGA.  Interested buyers can contact Turpin Real Estate at (908) 234-9100 or visit their site.
