The Homestead To Host 2009 USGA Senior Women's Amateur

Far Hills, N.J.  - The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va., has been selected by the United States Golf Association as the site of the 2009 USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship. The dates of the championship are Sept. 12-17.

Designed by William Flynn and opened in 1923, The Homestead will be hosting its eighth USGA championship. Most recently, the club was the site of the 2000 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, won by Greg Puga. The 1967 U.S. Women's Open, won by amateur Catherine Lacoste, was played at the course in the Allegheny Mountains. In addition, The Homestead hosted the 1928 and 1994 U.S. Women's Amateurs (won by Glenna Collett Vare and Wendy Ward, respectively), the 1988 U.S. Amateur (won by Eric Meeks), the 1980 USGA Senior Amateur (won by Bill Campbell) and the 1966 Curtis Cup Match. The course is considered the epitome of mountain golf with rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways and undulating greens.

The Homestead has hosted numerous state and regional tournaments and USGA championships qualifiers as well as the 2004 NCAA Men's Division I Golf Championship, the 1997 NCAA Men's East Regional, the 1932 NCAA Golf Championship and the 1995 and 1996 Merrill Lynch Senior PGA Tour Shoot-outs.

The USGA Senior Women's Amateur is making its second stop in the commonwealth of Virginia. It was previously held at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg in 1998, which was won by Gayle Borthwick.

"The whole family at The Homestead is proud to continue its long relationship with the USGA," said Don Ryder, director of golf. "We are pleased to extend our hospitality to the Senior Women's Amateur players as well as presenting a golf course that will challenge them on this national stage."

Prior to 2009, the USGA Senior Women's Amateur will be played at Sunriver (Ore.) Resort, from Sept. 1-6, 2007; and at Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club, from Sept. 20-26, 2008.

The USGA Senior Women's Amateur, for female amateurs, 50 years and older who have USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 18.4., is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

The USGA is the national governing body of golf in this country and Mexico, a combined territory that includes more than half the game's golfers and golf courses.

The Association's most visible role is played out each season in conducting 13 national championships, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open. Ten additional USGA national championships are exclusively for amateurs, and include the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Women's Amateur.
