Famed Golf Photographer Dies At 89

Far Hills, N.J. -- Master action photographer Hy Peskin, the individual behind the image of Ben Hogan's famous 1-iron approach shot to the 72nd hole at Merion in the 1950 U.S. Open, died June 2 in Israel. He was 89.
Peskin made a name for himself in the 1940s, 50s and 60s before starting a second career as a philanthropist and entrepreneur under the name of Brian Blaine Reynolds.
At the 1950 U.S. Open, Peskin found a proper location for his lens as Hogan was pulling out his 1-iron for the approach to the 18th hole. The photo shows Hogan in full form looking down the fairway lined with spectators.
Peskin began his career as a sportswriter during The Great Depression but turned to photography because he felt it would be more lucrative. His photos graced the cover of Sports Illustrated more than 40 times. He was the first staff photographer Sports Illustrated ever hired.
