December 6, 2005

Far Hills, N.J. - The United States Golf Association's 13 national championships will be highlighted in a 60-minute television special to be broadcast on NBC at 2 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 11).

The "USGA Year in Review" will show footage of all 13 national champions, with emphasis on the winners of the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur.

Hosted by Jimmy Roberts from Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., site of the 2006 Open, the show includes five members of the NBC golf broadcast team sharing their favorite USGA memories of the 2005 championship season.

From Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla., capping her amateur career by winning the U.S. Women's Amateur to the dramatic bunker shot by Korea 's Birdie Kim on the final hole at the U.S. Women's Open, there was plenty of excitement in 2005.

In between wins for Pressel and Kim , 15-year-old Michelle Wie of Honolulu, Hawaii, took on a men's field at the U.S. Amateur Public Links and marched all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Clay Odgen of West Point, Utah.

Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla., son of PGA champion Bob Tway , won the U.S. Junior Amateur, while 65-year-old Mike Rice of Houston, Texas, became the oldest winner of the USGA Senior Amateur in 18 years.

There were also come-from-behind winners at the U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open. Michael Campbell rejuvenated his career with a two-stroke win over Tiger Woods at the Open while Allen Doyle overtook the field with a final round 63 to capture the Senior Open.

Finally, a team of top amateurs from the USA snapped a three-match losing skid with a one-point victory over a team from Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup Match at historic Chicago Golf Club.

Ten of the USGA 13 national championships are strictly for amateurs. For more information on USGA championships or results from the 2005 championship season, visit online at www.usga.org.
