U.S. Women's Open Entry Application Fun Facts

A record number of entries were accepted for the 2005 U.S. Women's Open. The total of 1,158 was 61 more than the 1,097 accepted for the 2004 Women's Open.

The first player to file an online entry was Chelsa Dooley of Wilmar, Minn. The last to file was Kelly Mac Whinnie of Pittsburgh, Pa., at 4:34:51 on May 4, the last day entries were accepted.

The youngest competitor is Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., who is 10 (date of birth: Feb. 10, 1995). Ginger Howard of Jacksonville, Fla., is 11 (DOB: March 15, 1995). Five players were 12 at the time of filing: Kyle Roig, Dakoda Dowd, Jenny Shin, Tanya Wadhwa and Danielle Frasier.

The oldest player who listed her date of birth on her entry form is Dale Shaw of La Quinta, Calif. She is 58.

Players from 43 different countries have entered, including 38 from Canada. Thirty-one players listed Korea as their preferred address, but all of them used U.S. addresses on their entry forms.

Danielle Amiee and Pamela Crikelair, the finalists from The Golf Channel's reality show "Big Break III: Ladies Only," have filed entries. Both must go through local qualifying.

You can call her coach: Carrie Forsyth, the coach of defending NCAA Division I women's champion UCLA, is entered. Laree Sugg, the head coach at Richmond and a former LPGA Tour player, is also entered. Forsyth and Sugg were teammates at UCLA for the 1990-91 season.

Centennial Open? Should Carol Semple Thompson advance into the field from sectional qualifying, the Women's Open would be the Pennsylvanian's 100th USGA event. Thompson has won seven USGA titles, including the 1973 U.S. Women's Amateur.

Cherie Zaun is the mother of Toronto Blue Jays catcher Greg Zaun and the sister of former big-leaguer RickDempsey.
