This is the 19th consecutive year the U.S. Open has been a sellout, beginning with the 1987 Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. The U.S. Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
Pinehurst Resort (No. 2 Course) will be hosting the U.S. Open for the second time. The late Payne Stewart won in 1999.
Retief Goosen is the defending champion, having won the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., by two strokes over Phil Mickelson.
