Holland To Captain USA Men's Team At 2004 World Amateur Team Championships
March 3, 2004 Far Hills, N.J. - Trey Holland of Indianapolis, Ind., has been named captain of the United States of America team for the 2004 World Amateur Team Championships, the United States Golf Association has announced.

Holland, who served as USGA president and joint chairman of the IGF in 2000-2001, will lead the three-player USA team, which will compete at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, from Oct. 28-31. The championship is an international team event conducted by the International Golf Federation and is hosted this year by the Puerto Rico Golf Association.

"Perhaps the most singular privilege in sport is having the opportunity to represent one's country in an international event," said Holland. "It is truly an honor to be asked to serve as the captain of our men's World Amateur team."

Holland, who served four years as vice president before his first year as president in 2000, joined the group in 1991 after serving on the USGA's Sectional Affairs Committee. He was chairman of the Championship Committee in 1998-99 and served as chairman of the Rules of Golf Committee from 1993-97. He is particularly interested in the Rules of Golf and their application for the disabled. He also served as chairman of the Grants Committee of the USGA Foundation from 1996-99. Professionally, Holland is a physician, who practices with Associated Urologists, Inc. He is a graduate of Wabash College and the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The World Amateur Team Championship began in 1958. The IGF was founded in 1958 to encourage the international development of the game and to employ golf as a vehicle to foster friendship and sportsmanship. Recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the official international federation for golf, the IGF comprises the national governing bodies of golf of more than 100 countries.

As one of its main functions, the IGF conducts the World Amateur Team Championships for women and men on a biennial basis. The Women's World Amateur Team Championship, also at Rio Mar Country Club, is scheduled from Oct. 20-23. The next championships are scheduled for 2006 in South Africa.
