Opened in 1918 and designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, Pebble Beach has been host to 10 previous USGA championships, including four previous U.S. Opens. Each of those Opens was won by one of the game’s great players – Jack Nicklaus in 1972, Tom Watson in 1982, Tom Kite in 1992, and Tiger Woods in 2000. Additionally, Pebble Beach is the home of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, a PGA Tour event, each February.

The Open, which was first conducted in 1895, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

Prior to 2010, the Open will be played from June 16-19, 2005, at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club (No. 2 Course) in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C.; from June 15-18, 2006, at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.; from June 14-17, 2007, at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.; from June 12-15, 2008, at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif.; and from June 18-21, 2009, at Bethpage State Park (Black Course) in Farmingdale, N.Y.
