Sea Island Golf Club To Host USGA Senior Women's Amateur For Sixth Time

Far Hills, N.J. – Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., has been selected by the United States Golf Association to host the 2006 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur. The championship will be played from Oct. 7-12.

Walter Travis designed the original Plantation Nine of Sea Island Golf Club in 1927, followed by Harry Colt and C.H. Alison’s Seaside Nine, Retreat Nine by Dick Wilson and Marshside Nine by Joe Lee. In 1998 and 1999, Rees Jones and Tom Fazio redesigned all four nine to create today’s Seaside and Plantation courses. Sea Island (www.seaisland.com) will be hosting its eighth USGA Championship and sixth Senior Women’s Amateur. The club previously hosted the 1971, 1980, 1988, 1994 and 2000 Senior Women’s Amateur, the 1963 USGA Senior Amateur and will host the 2004 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

“Sea Island has a long and storied tradition of hosting championship golf events,” said David Everett, president and chief operating officer of Sea Island Company. “We are honored that the USGA recognizes our commitment to the game by bringing the Senior Women’s Amateur to Sea Island Golf Club again.”

The Senior Women’s Amateur is open to female amateur golfers who will have reached their 50th birthday on or before the start of the championship in that calendar year and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4. Previous champions of the Senior Women’s Amateur: Carol Semple Thompson, Marlene Streit, Anne Sander, Dorothy Porter, Carolyn Cudone and Maureen Orcutt.

Prior to 2006, the Senior Women’s Amateur will be played at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif., from Oct. 9-14, 2004, and at The Apawamis Club in Rye, N.Y., from Sept. 17-22, 2005.
