Victoria National Golf Club To Host 2006 USGA Senior Amateur

September 2, 2003
Far Hills, N.J. - Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind., has been selected as the site of the 2006 USGA Senior Amateur Championship, the United States Golf Association has announced. The 52nd USGA Senior Amateur will be conducted from Sept. 16-21.
Victoria National's 18-hole golf course, designed by Tom Fazio and owned by Terry Friedman, a retired entrepreneur, will host its first USGA championship.
Opened in 1998, Victoria National was the host venue for the 2002 Indiana State Amateur, won by 2002 U.S. Amateur Public Links runner-up Lee Williamson. The club has also served as a qualifying site for the 1999 U.S. Amateur, 2000 U.S. Open, and 2001 U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Victoria National, which has the feel of a links course due to large mounds and contoured fairways, was built around an existing surface coal mine. As a result, water-filled mining pits serve as hazards on 15 of the 18 holes.
"It will be a fantastic experience for this community that the USGA is able to bring this national championship to southern Indiana," said Tom Rose, head golf professional. "We feel the community will help support this championship and make it a great event."
Prior to 2006, the USGA Senior Amateur will be played at The Virginian Golf Club, Bristol, Va., from Sept. 6-11, 2003; and Bel-Air Country Club, Los Angeles, Calif., from Oct. 9-14, 2004.
