3 Players, Including Amateur William Haas, Share Qualifying Medal At Woodmont Sectional

Far Hills, N.J. - Amateur Bill Haas, of Greer, S.C., a collegiate All-American and the son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas, shot a nine-under-par 133, to share medalist honors with Rod Pampling and Hidemichi Tanaka at U.S. Open sectional qualifying at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

As rain on the Eastern seaboard interrupted play at all five sites, 48 spots in the 156-player U.S. Open field were ready to be awarded. Qualifying at eight sites Monday had added 35 players to the field. More than 750 golfers competed in sectional qualifying for the 103rd U.S. Open championship.

At Woodmont's North and South courses, the field of 156 players, the largest of any of the 13 qualifying sites, was vying for the last of 34 spots in 2003 Open, which will be played June 12-15 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill. More than 750 players competed for the 83 available spots in the U.S. Open field of 156.

Haas, the medalist and a semifinalist at the 2001 U.S. Amateur, shot 69-64 as Woodmont endured another wet day. He won first-team All-American honors this year for the second time playing for Wake Forest. Along with Curtis Strange, Lanny Wadkins, Gary Hallberg, Jim Simons and his father, Haas is the only Demon Deacon golfers to be named first-team more than once.

The 36-hole qualifier was suspended Tuesday because the course became unplayable after long periods of heavy rain but all players had completed 18 holes. Play began for the final 18 holes at 12:20 p.m.

"This was a case of the superintendent and his crew saving the day," said USGA qualifying official Mike Cumberpatch. "Woodmont's superintendent Mike Larsen leads by example and he rounded up 30 squeegees from his fellow supers in the area. He personally squeegeed greens for six hours. Woodmont has done this qualifying for 17 straight years and all the people there are terrific."

One stroke behind Haas, Pampling and Tanaka at 134 were Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Kent Jones and Joey Sindelar.

Other notables advancing to Olympia Fields were 1987 Masters champion Larry Mize (68-69-137) and the leader after 18 holes, amateur Chez Reavie, of Tempe, Ariz. (63-74-138). On Tuesday, Arizona State All-American Reavie led the pack with a 7-under-par 63 on the South Course. Reavie, the 2001 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, was one stroke better than Durant.

Among those failing to qualify were 1998 U.S. Amateur champion Hank Kuehne, now a PGA Tour member, at 140, Steve Elkington at 147 and Hal Sutton, who shot 71 Tuesday and withdrew.

Despite rainy conditions, Billy Andrade shot 68-69-137 at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga., to also earn a spot.

After morning storms passed at Settindown Creek, 18-year-old Luke List, of Ringgold, Ga., posted a pair of 68s for a total of 136 and was the medalist by one stroke over Andrade. List, who will play golf at Vanderbilt as a freshman in the fall, led Baylor High School in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the 2002 state championship.

Sweden's Fredrick Jacobson, who was won the 2003 Hong Kong Open and was 30th on the European Tour's Order of Merit in 2002, earned medalist honors by shooting 3-under-par 138 (68-70) at the Purchase, N.Y. site, which included the par 70 Old Oaks Country Club and the par 71 Century Country Club. Jacobson will be playing in his first U.S. Open.

At Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla., Maarten Lafaber of Holland and Matt Seppanen, of Orlando, shared the qualifying medal at 139. Others to qualify in Orlando were Alan Morin, of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., PGA pro Grant Waite and Nationwide Tour member Doug Dunakey.

Rain didn't deter the smaller field at Chevy Chase Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md., as Sean Murphy, of Scottsdale, Ariz., at 64-73-137, and Dicky Pride and Chris Anderson, of Covina, Calif., at 138 grabbed the qualifier's three spots.

In Monday's qualifiers, Stewart Cink set two different course records on his way to a 36-hole total of 21-under-par 123, leading 20 successful qualifiers at the Columbus, Ohio, sectional qualifying site. Columbus was one of eight sectional qualifiers on Monday, filling 35 spots in the U.S. Open championship field. Five more sectional qualifiers will be held on Tuesday for an additional 48 spots.

Cink shot 10-under-par 62 at The Lakes Golf and Country Club in the morning and then finished with an 11-under-par 61 at the nearby Double Eagle Club.

"I've played some good rounds before, but that was kind of ridiculous," said Cink, who finished third at the 2001 Open.

Trip Kuehne (a), who was runner-up to Tiger Woods at the 1994 U.S. Amateur, mulled around the grounds of Bethpage State Park hoping anyone in the 156-player U.S. Open field might come up lame or a little under the weather as of a year ago.

As an alternate, Kuehne could use the practice facilities, but he needed a last-second withdrawal to actually tee it up in the U.S. Open. This year, Kuehne won't have to worry about his place in the Open field. The 30-year-old from McKinney, Texas, whose brother, Hank, won the 1998 U.S. Amateur and whose sister, Kelli, captured the 1994 Girls' Junior and the 1995 and '96 Women's Amateur titles, earned his trip to Olympia Fields by posting rounds of 62 and 73 at the sectional qualifier in his hometown of McKinney, Texas.

The 10-under 62 in the morning 18 set a competitive course record on the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch. "I was just trying to get it to the house," Kuehne told the Dallas Morning News of his mindset for the afternoon 18. "I called all my boys afterward and told them not to show up for the second round because I'd probably shoot 77."

Other notable successful golfers on Monday were Bob Tway, Mark Calcavecchia, Jesper Parnevek, Chad Campbell, Tim Clark and Bryce Molder.
