Golden Horseshoe To Host 2004 Women's Amateur Public Links

Far Hills, N.J. - Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., has been selected as the site of the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship (WAPL), the United States Golf Association has announced. The championship will be played on the resort's Green Course from June 22-27, 2004

In 2003, Michelle Wie, 13, became the youngest champion in the 108-year history of USGA adult championships when she won the WAPL at Ocean Hammock Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla.

"We are thrilled to welcome the USGA and the competitors to Golden Horseshoe Golf Club," said Glen Byrnes, director of golf. "This year's WAPL was so exciting and with Michelle defending her first national title at Golden Horseshoe, the 2004 championship should be equally compelling."

The Green Course, which was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1991, will be hosting its third USGA championship. Previously, the 1998 USGA Senior Women's Amateur and the 1999 USGA Women's State Team Championships were conducted on the Green Course. The course has been the site of numerous Virginia State Golf Association and Mid-Atlantic championship events.

Fashioned from the mature forests and ravines of eastern Virginia, the characteristic features of the Green Course include many inherent to links courses, especially pot bunkers, tightly mown fairways and rough, and "bump-and-run alleys" that make putting surfaces accessible to shots with a variety of trajectories.

Golden Horseshoe is located within Colonial Williamsburg's 301-acre historic area, the restored 18th-century capitol of Virginia. For more information, please contact the USGA Championships Department at (908) 234-2300.
