Far Hills, N.J. - Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., has been selected as the site of the 2007 U.S. Amateur, the United States Golf Association has announced. The championship will be conducted from Aug. 20-26, with Pinehurst No. 2 and Pinehurst No. 4 used for play.

The site of the 1999 U.S. Open won by Payne Stewart, and the upcoming 2005 Open, Pinehurst No. 2 also has been host to seven other USGA championships, including the 1962 Amateur, won by Lebron Harris, the 1989 Women's Amateur, won by Vicki Goetze, and the 1994 Senior Open, won by Simon Hobday.

Pinehurst No. 2, which will exclusively host the final six rounds of match play following 36 holes of stroke play, was designed by Donald Ross and completely opened in 1907.

"We at Pinehurst are pleased to have been selected as the site of one of the greatest championships in all of golf," said Patrick Corso, president and CEO of Pinehurst, Inc. "The principles of amateur golf are at the very core of Pinehurst values. They are best exemplified by the Amateur Creed written by past USGA president and former Pinehurst president Richard Tufts and live on today."

The U.S. Amateur is the oldest of the USGA's 13 national championships, with the first Amateur conducted in 1895 at Newport (R.I.) Country Club. Past winners of the Amateur title include Arnold Palmer (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1958, 1961) and Tiger Woods (1994-96). Two of the last five Amateur champions were winners on the PGA Tour in 2002 - Matt Kuchar (1997 champion) and David Gossett (1999 champion).

Prior to 2007, the Amateur will be played at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club from Aug. 18-24, 2003; at Winged Foot (N.Y.) Country Club from Aug. 16-22, 2004; at Merion (Pa.) Country Club from Aug. 22-28, 2005; and at Hazeltine (Minn.) National Golf Club from Aug. 21-27, 2006.
