About the USGA: 

The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches. Together with The R&A, the USGA governs the game worldwide, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, Equipment Standards and World Amateur Golf Rankings. The USGA’s working jurisdiction comprises the United States, its territories and Mexico.

The USGA is a global leader in the development and support of sustainable golf course management practices. It serves as a primary steward for the game’s history and funds an ongoing “For the Good of the Game” charitable giving program. Additionally, the USGA’s Course Rating and Handicap systems are used on six continents in more than 50 countries.

Position Summary: 

This basic timeline should give you an idea of the many roles you will play throughout this internship.  From your work on the loading dock and in the office, to your time in the Merchandise Pavilion with some of the biggest golf merchandise and apparel companies, you will leave with a greater understanding of the merchandise operation of a major Championship.  This internship is a great way to gain valuable experience in sports management.  The industry contacts with whom these interns will interact are the best in the business.  The whole experience is very team oriented; we expect our interns to work hard, hold responsibility, and be dedicated to presenting the best U.S. Open experience possible while learning valuable tools through experiential learning. 

What You Can Expect 

Early May (Approx. 40 hours/week)

  • Assist with receiving incoming merchandise for the Open Championships on the docks in the merchandise compound
    •  Moving boxes, counting product and loading/organizing the boxes onto trucks
    • Working with merchandise vendors such as Polo, Nike, Adidas, etc., and representing the USGA well

Mid-May (Approx. 50 hours/week)

  • Assist the merchandise staff in the on-site office
    • This includes maintaining the office, answering phones, helping receive smaller orders and assisting with merchandise volunteer packets and training session preparation and more

Late May (Including Memorial Day Weekend) Approx. 60 hours/week)

  • Assist with merchandise set-up and visual displays in the Merchandise Pavilion and Satellite Tent
    • This includes working with vendors to move product into the tent, organizing backstock and aesthetically merchandising the sales floor and more

Early June (Approx. 70 hours/week)

  • Assist in the final preparations for the Merchandise Pavilion and Satellite Tent
    • This entails creating sinage, organizing the POS stations and helping our visual merchandiser dress mannequins and forms and more

Mid/Late June (U.S. Open & Women's Open) (Approx. 90 - 105 hours/week)

  • Assist our full-time merchandise staff in running the Merchandise Pavilion and Satellite Tent for the Open Championships
    • This includes directing over 1,600 volunteers in various areas of the merchandise operation and assisting vendors
    • Thi interns will be filling a variety of positions from customer service to replenishing back-stock and helping to manage and maintain the Pavilion and Satellite Tent and more

Late June (Approx. 30 - 40 hours/week)

  • Assist with the breakdown of the merchandise operation
    • This includes post-event sales and ending inventory procedures

What You Bring to the USGA 

  • Candidates must be capable to assist in the movement of boxes weighing approximately 30-70 lbs., especially during early May and Memorial Day weekend
  • Must be able to communicate effeciently with a wide variety of individuals
  • Must be resourceful, presentable, courteous, friendly and organized
  • Ability to work independently and support the team
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office Software - above average knowledge of Excel, Word, Publisher, Outlook & PowerPoint  
  • Diplomatic, even tempered personality - able to communicate and work well with a wide variety of people involved in the Championship
  • Demonstrate ability to follow and execute detailed plans - able to anticipate and analyze problems and provide logical solutions
  • Able to think logically and prioritize tasks
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Must remain flexible with an ever-changing environment
  • Able to assume full responsibility for projects
  • Able to accomplish tasks quickly and thoroughly
  • Ability to work with various tools and equipment
