P.J. Boatwright Intern, Georgia State Golf Foundation

Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 365 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.

3 - 6 month, full-time internship (must commit to three consecutive months)

The orientation and training will include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following areas of service:
- Georgia State Golf Foundation: The intern(s) will work with Georgia State Golf Association’s (GSGA) charitable service entity and will observe the methods and procedures by which the GSGF operates. Training will include development and execution of fund raising initiatives, such as locating past scholars and creating a database for the Scholars’ Alumni Club, plus additional donor recognition and retention activities. There will be opportunities to recruit and identify scholarship candidates including presentations to Member Clubs’ staff and other related events to heighten awareness of the Foundation’s scholarship program. The intern(s) will attend scholarship interviews, GSGF Board meetings, be involved with the Georgia Cup Tournament, the Foundation’s largest annual fund raising event and the Annual Scholars’ Luncheon which recognizes new and past scholars.
- Handicapping: The intern(s) will work with the GSGA Handicapping Department staff to learn the principles and administration of the USGA Handicap System, the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN) computation system, and how the association’s volunteer Handicap Committee provides a liaison link with Member Clubs.
- Course Rating: The intern(s) will work with the Course Rating Department staff to learn the proper method for measuring and rating courses according to the USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating systems, and how the raw data is compiled and calculated to determine the course and slope rating of a course. There will be opportunities to observe and assist course rating teams on actual rating visits to GSGA Member Clubs and their courses.
- Rules and Competitions: The intern(s) will work with the Rules and Competitions Department and will observe the methods and procedures by which the GSGA conducts its competitions and qualifying rounds for USGA championships. Included will be training on the rules of golf, course marking and set-up, entry procedures and communication to players. The department will provide opportunities for the intern to observe and participate with GSGA volunteer committees on the development and execution of statewide competitions.
