Position Summary: 

As a member of the USGA Communications Department, the Social Media Specialist is responsible for leading social media for the United States Golf Association, reporting to the Manager, Websites and Digital Platforms. This position is responsible for delivering content via the USGA’s social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) to drive brand awareness and grow followership, while increasing engagement with key audiences around both the USGA’s national championships (U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open and 10 amateur championships) and the USGA’s core functions and programs, particularly its efforts to make the game more accessible, affordable, enjoyable and faster to play.


The Social Media Specialist is also responsible for seeking new and unique social media opportunities to achieve the organization’s goals of building brand awareness and increasing the Association’s “voice” and presence across the golf community, including with fans, players, USGA Members, USGA Member Clubs, state and regional golf associations and other allied organizations, industry influencers and others.


The Social Media Specialist must have a proven track record in building a social media presence, and must have leadership skills to influence, build consensus, and integrate across teams. He/she would also interact with internal as well as outside partners to integrate social media strategies into multi-channel communications campaigns. Additionally, the Social Media Specialist develops measurement and reporting tools to articulate a clear value. The ability to travel approximately 15% is required, including to some USGA championships and non-championship events.


What You Can Expect 

  • Independently work with internal stakeholders across departments to identify, schedule and post content to deliver brand and engagement impact through social media channels, while managing reputational risk by ensuring proper messaging is being executed online. This includes: consistent and relevant Facebook posts; Twitter posts; Instagram posts; sharing new USGA videos, photos, stories, press releases, ticket and merchandise offers, events, etc; writing copy for all posts; and creating content during Championships to gain interactions while fans are most engaged with the USGA, and determining which social media platform(s) will be the most effective in sharing each particular piece of content. Monitor audience response to all posts to make adjustments as needed to increase engagement. Stay up to date on strategic initiatives throughout the organization.
  • Work with the Communications Team to manage and deploy social media and content strategies across USGA core functions with a focus on delivering consistent, creative and holistic social media presence for the USGA and its Championships to grow brand awareness and expand the USGA’s reach at the local, regional, national and global levels on all social media platforms. Serve as an active member of the Content and Editorial team, pitching and presenting content ideas that will be impactful across all Association platforms.
  • Develop social media engagement metrics that can provide a clear sense of value for social communications and initiatives and drive towards defining ROI. Coordinate with Digital Media, Merchandising for tracking links to posts. Prepare monthly social media status reports for internal use. Utilize social media sentiment monitoring to provide key feedback and recommendations for future content and messaging across the Communications Department.
  • Maintain security and access to all social media channels. Works with business partners and IT functions to communicate and clarify business needs, as appropriate. Assists in maintaining the quality control of all social media sites and tools. Researches and maintains vendor relationships for existing and emerging social media solutions. Provide technical problem solving and consultation on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube to meet the needs of the USGA consistently and effectively.
  • Stay up to date on the latest trends and accepted practices in social media, helping the USGA maintain a strong and growing social presence. Network with social media influencers in golf (sports) around the country and key international markets. Work with state and regional golf associations to develop and promote the use of social media at the grassroots levels of the game.

What You Bring to the USGA 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Sports Management, Business Administration or related field; or equivalent work experience required
  • 2 years of related professional work experience (sports/entertainment/social media/digital media) required
  • Strong knowledge of the social media ecosystem/culture and jargon; from vendors, to partners, to technology
  • Intimate working understanding of social media strategy and content development experience
  • Proven track-record of developing and delivering successful, measurable social media content
  • Interest in and understanding of the USGA and golf, both historic and current
  • Knowledgeable and comfortable with tools and technologies including Twitter, Facebook API, Instagram, YouTube, HTML
  • Knowledge in ‘traditional’ digital marketing (search, display, video) as a basis to understanding the inter-connection between social media and all digital channels
  • Experience with Web 2.0 technology, HTML, Word Processing software, preferably Microsoft Office, image editing software, Google +, HootSuite/TweetDeck or equivalent and other social network management systems
  • Sports, entertainment, or experience working with organizing bodies, teams, athletes and corporate sponsors
  • Exceptional communication (especially verbal and written) skills, as well as executive presence and professionalism required
  • Creative and well-organized; good collaboration skills; and able to multitask while meeting ongoing deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude and desire to learn
