About the USGA: 


The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches. Together with The R&A, the USGA governs the game worldwide, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, Equipment Standards and World Amateur Golf Rankings. The USGA’s working jurisdiction comprises the United States, its territories and Mexico.

Position Summary: 

The Senior Legal Counsel reports to the Chief Legal Officer and will work closely with a legal team of seven.  This position will work with a number of departments within USGA, and will be directly responsible for supporting the Broadcasting, Digital Media, Corporate Partners, Championships and Information Technologies teams as it relates to Legal Services.

What You Can Expect 


  • Negotiate contracts and oversee legal aspects of relationships with broadcast and digital partners; assure compliance with applicable laws, including privacy, for digital platforms
  • Negotiate contracts with host clubs, vendors and related parties for the conduct of U.S. Open Championships; responsible for legal oversight of all aspects of U.S. Open Championships
  • Negotiate strategic partnership agreements with key USGA partners
  • Provide legal guidance and oversight to marketing efforts of USGA 
  • Support legal needs of Information Technologies function, including multiple third-party contracts
  • Oversee corporate governance for national non-profit association, including development and maintenance of policies, governing documents, and related compliance



What You Bring to the USGA 

  • Excellent academic credentials (undergraduate and law school)
  • Admitted in good standing with at least 7 years’ experience
  • Strong commercial contract skills
  • Expertise in advertising, marketing, digital, privacy and talent/rights practice areas 
  • Critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, and collaboration with all levels of association management; service oriented approach
  • General corporate governance and compliance experience
  • Team player who also demonstrates individual initiative and is comfortable working independently
  • Possesses maturity and sound legal judgment
