About the USGA: 

The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches. Together with The R&A, the USGA governs the game worldwide, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, Equipment Standards and World Amateur Golf Rankings. The USGA’s working jurisdiction comprises the United States, its territories and Mexico.

The USGA is a global leader in the development and support of sustainable golf course management practices. It serves as a primary steward for the game’s history and funds an ongoing “For the Good of the Game” charitable giving program. Position Summary: 

The Senior Director, Development is responsible for defining and executing solutions and technologies that achieve the organization’s strategic priorities. They will focus on establishing value to the business by recommending technology platforms, solutions, disciplines, and establishing best practices; leading internal team(s)  and managing partnerships with external vendors; planning for risk and growth opportunities; anticipating and reacting to major technology changes, inducing contingency plans for all projects; and assuring successful execution of all development projects.

What You Can Expect 

  • Identify technology trends and evolving social behavior that may support or impede the success of the business
  • Work across USGA functions to define development and product strategies which  align with the USGA’s strategic priorities and technology industry trends
    • Evaluate and identify appropriate technology platforms (including web application frameworks and the deployment stack) for delivering the company’s services
    • Lead strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of all web-based services
  • Work directly with senior management and key stakeholders to ensure business proposition matches strategic priorities, architecture drives  best in class product design, success metrics and targets are clearly defined, and that product is measured to validate desired impact to the business
    • Establish standards of performance and monitor conformance for staff and vendors
    • Select, deploy, and monitor performance profiling tools and procedures
  • Participate as a member of the senior management team in establishing governance processes of direction and control to ensure that objectives are achieved, risks are managed appropriately and the organization’s resources are used responsibly, particularly in the areas of software development, data quality management and data integration
    • Establish a software development and data governance process that meets government, regulatory, partner, and company expectations for customer information
    • Ensure the company’s internal technology processes and customer-facing services comply with community expectations and applicable laws and regulations for privacy, security, and social responsibility
  • Lead the teams responsible for the implementation of systems and products and monitor their effectiveness in meeting the business needs;  work with senior leadership and the business owners to follow industry best practices in these areas
  • Select and manage development team(s) comprised of staff and/or outsourced vendors to develop and implement project requirements conforming to established standards
  • Establish and supervise the software development process, setting short-term objectives and assessing progress as defined by the selected software development methodology
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices
    • Ensure that technology standards and best practices are maintained across the organization
  • Ensure company technical problems are resolved in a timely and cost-effective manner
  • Develop, track, and control the development and deployment annual operating and capital budgets for purchasing, staffing, and operations
  • Additional duties assigned as needed

What You Bring to the USGA 

  • Degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or other related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in systems, web application, and product development
  • 5+ years of experience in a  leadership role
  • Proven expertise in the design, development, and deployment of enterprise-level architecture
  • Expertise in continuous integration and agile methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to envision web-based services that meet consumer needs or solve business problems
  • Superior strategic, analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Programming language familiarity such as: AJAX, HTML, VB.NET, CSS, XML\XSLT, JavaScript, MS-SQL Server, web and Windows service development and techniques such as responsive design and familiarity with web standards
  • Hands-on experience coding in more than one currently popular web application framework
  • Knowledge of Internet protocols and RFC standards, database management systems, and revision control systems
  • Familiarity with information security vulnerabilities and risk management as well as consumer privacy and payment industry compliance requirements
  • Exposure to business theory, business process development, governance processes, management, budgeting, and administrative operations
  • Ability to set and manage priorities judiciously
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to motivate in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
