Position Summary: 

The Senior Director, Communications is responsible for leading the effort to amplify the USGA’s enterprise-wide messaging and visibility both within, and beyond, the global golf community. This role will proactively develop and lead the implementation of effective communication strategies that enhance public awareness and understanding of the USGA, its championships and programs, and its contribution to the game of golf. With a focus on organizational reputation enhancement and safeguarding, this role will lead a team of public relations professionals as well as the USGA’s robust championship communications efforts. This position will also serve as a trusted senior communications advisor to the President, Executive Committee, Executive Director, and Executive Staff, delivering expert counsel and communications support for all USGA leadership.

What You Can Expect 

  • Communications Strategy: Serve as principal in designing and implementing the USGA’s strategic communications plans. This will focus on all earned media opportunities, including traditional and new media outlets, and will advance the USGA’s message in the press year-round, including during the busy championship season.  Effective plans will integrate all aspects of the USGA and will be closely integrated with marketing, broadcast, digital and social plans. Plans should also include a crisis and issues management plan to protect the association’s reputation when faced with challenges.
  • Message and Material Development: Lead the creation of compelling, timely and effective messaging, talking points and materials for an array of audiences and opportunities.  Draft scripts and speeches for the President and Executive Director, and prepare briefing materials for press conferences, media interviews and other public appearances.
  • Media Outreach: Serve as a primary spokesperson for the association and oversee external communications efforts. Develop trusting relationships with national and regional media and proactively manage the media profile of USGA leadership.
  • Manage the Team and Build Relationships: Lead the department’s staff and external vendors to drive results. Provide coaching and guidance to develop staff and create a positive work environment.  Foster strong relationships with all staff and create a culture of collaboration. Provide external media training for key staff (as appropriate).
  • Manage the communications department, including the budget and other administrative functions required of department leaders.
  • Additional duties assigned as needed.

What You Bring to the USGA 

  • Bachelor’s with advanced degree in Communications, Business Administration, Journalism or related area is preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in a senior, strategic leadership role in corporate communications on the corporate, agency or association side including substantial PR experience
  • Excellent relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated track record in leading and managing a strategic communications function 
  • Strong knowledge of and passion for golf
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and leading national public relations campaigns that are aligned and integrated with strong branding or marketing initiatives
  • Must have demonstrated experience in utilizing digital media to create robust and compelling content that increases and enhances customer experiences
  • Proven experience serving as a spokesperson within a high-profile organization including managing media during crisis situations
  • Deep knowledge of communications vehicles, including print, broadcast, electronic, social and digital media
  • Demonstrated success evaluating changing business conditions and effectively shifting communications priorities as necessary
  • Keen sense of judgment and tact, as well as the ability to work with all levels of management, the media and/or general public
  • Ability to delegate direction and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Solid management skills, with the capability to effectively manage project and processes across multiple areas of the organization
  • Ability to interface, impact and influence at all levels within the organization
  • Proven ability to motivate and manage a team of skilled professionals
