The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches. Together with The R&A, the USGA governs the game worldwide, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, Equipment Standards and World Amateur Golf Rankings. The USGA’s working jurisdiction comprises the United States, its territories and Mexico.

The USGA is a global leader in the development and support of sustainable golf course management practices. It serves as a primary steward for the game’s history and funds an ongoing “For the Good of the Game” charitable giving program. Additionally, the USGA’s Course Rating and Handicap systems are used on six continents in more than 50 countries.

Position Summary: 

The Rules of Golf Associate is primarily responsible for responding to Rules of Golf inquiries which involves independent judgment in a matter of great significance to the USGA. The Associate is also responsible for understanding and applying the Rules of Amateur Status to applications for reinstatement to amateur status as well as handling Rules of Amateur Status inquiries.  The Rules of Golf Associate interfaces with Equipment Standards Staff, Handicap Department, and Championship Department and Regional Affairs personnel within the USGA.  The Associate interfaces with many constituents, including but not limited to, club professionals, golf association personnel, PGA Sectional Office personnel, Tour Rules Officials and individual golfers external to the USGA.  The Rules of Golf Associate position is a two-year assignment, after which employment with the USGA will end.    

 


Duties 

  • Research, clarify and Respond to Rules of Golf Emails, Letters and Facsimiles with solid decision on rules of golf inquiry. 
  • Research, clarify and Respond to Rules of Golf Phone Calls with solid decision on rules of golf inquiry. 
  • Process Applications for Reinstatement to Amateur Status and respond to Rules of Amateur Status Phone Calls, Emails, Letters and Facsimile.   Make final recommendation(s) on reinstatement of amateur status.  
  • Work on special projects and assignments as directed by members of the Rules of Golf staff, such as proofreading Rules of Golf, Decisions on the Rules of Golf and Rule of the Day; Coordinate materials for Rules of Golf Workshops; Teach Rules of Golf; and working at USGA Championships. Respond to questions about and register participants for Rules of Golf Workshops. 
  • Document Rules of Golf Q’s and A’s for issues not covered in eh Decisions on the Rules of Golf. Develop and implement form responses to email inquiries and revise existing form responses to remain current with changes to the Rules of Golf.  

 

 

Knowledge, Education, Skills & Abilities 

  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess a strong interest in a career in golf administration.
  • Demonstrated interest in and understanding of the Rules of Golf and Rules of Amateur Status. 
  • Attended a PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Workshop and taken the 100 question exam administered at the workshop.    
  • The Associate must be able to respond to inquiries in a tactful and timely manner, and work without supervision, particularly during the USGA Championship season. 
  • Experience working at a golf association, PGA Section, is a plus.
