Position Summary: 


Directly responsible for implementation and improvement of all operational, logistical, and financial analysis aspects of on-site U.S. Open merchandise operation including customer service logistical components from initial development through final execution.  Role focuses on all aspects of departmental strategic plan in support of the overall Association strategic plan. Works closely in a collaborative capacity with a team-oriented merchandise department of eight. Will represent the Association with the highest level of professionalism in interactions with the best brands in the industry. This positions works closely with all levels of Association staff, golf industry professionals, U.S Open Championship staff, merchandise vendors, operations vendors, U.S. Open volunteers, host club members and representatives, Ralph Lauren staff, POS-System staff, UPS staff, visual merchandising staff, etc.


What You Can Expect 


  • Manage all operational aspects of the merchandise program
  • Work closely with Championship Staff and operations vendors on all logistics areas including layout of merchandise compound, office trailer set-up, and tent structures, loading dock, HVAC, lighting, electrical, communications, wireless, security, signage, check tent, shipping tent, etc.
  • Manage loading dock and surrounding compound
  • Address and resolve all merchandise operations related issues that arise during Championship
  • Oversee load-in and product stocking of Merchandise Pavilion and Satellite Tents
  • Responsible for breakdown of operation and coordinate return of ending inventory and supplies to Golf House as well as shipment of donations and return of consignment product
  • Manage post-Championship sale if necessary


  • Develop buy plan statistics in detail by sales projections, categories, units, category percentages, wholesale pricing and retail pricing
  • Develop budget including revenue projections and expenses
  • Manage expenses and develop more efficient and fiscally responsible ways to implement merchandise program
  • Work with accounting department on forecasting projections and updates quarterly
  • Develop and maintain system to archive historical sales data by vendor and units


  • Develop and conduct all surveys for department
  • Collaborate with IT department and survey consultant on technical aspects and questions for surveys
  • Compile thorough reports of survey results
  • Suggest and implement action items for improvements to merchandise program based upon survey feedback


  • Manage fixture program with Ralph Lauren and fixture logistics sub-contractor
  • Develop and manage floor plan revisions and improvements annually
  • Oversee Google sketch drawings of merchandise tents, layouts, compound, and other elements of program
  • Maintain inventory catalog of fixtures with photos and quantities
  • Work closely with visual designer on layout, flow and look/feel of Pavilion and Satellite Tents
  • Manage production of visual and branding aspects including banners, archive photos, and other visual areas of program
  • Manage planning and implementation of Satellite Tent quantity, size, layout, and locations
  • Manage vendor/product placement in merchandise tents


  • Manage relationship with POS-system company
  • Implement online purchase order management system
  • Ensure accurate and timely hangtags/barcodes production and delivery to vendors
  • Oversee receiving of incoming merchandise and accuracy of beginning inventory
  • Manage replenishment order placement with vendors and collaborate on sales analysis and product/unit selection
  • Manage point-of-sale area during Championship and assist with flow and transaction speed during busier times including managing support staff and interns
  • Manage ending inventory procedures including physical inventory with vendors, inventory reduction forms, defectives, and markdowns, pilferage, shipping credits, etc.
  • Manage invoice payment following timeline and ensuring accuracy
  • Create detailed post-Open movement and invoice reports
  • Work closely with POS-system company to advance the technology area of sales including software, hardware, potential testing of iPad payments, mobile applications, etc.


  • Collaborate with merchandise staff at product selection meetings
  • Participate in new product development ideas


  • Manage merchandise volunteer group including overseeing work of chairman, availability forms, scheduling, mailings, etc.
  • Manage training sessions including location selection, dates, logistics, PowerPoint presentation
  • Collaborate closely with Championship office on all aspects of volunteer operation
  • Update technology aspects of volunteer database and online availability and scheduling program as necessary


  • Manage relationship with UPS
  • Manage receiving operation and coordinate with UPS and merchandise vendors
  • Schedule and manage product delivery dates
  • Responsible for product and truck security
  • Oversee organization and layout of all storage trucks
  • Oversee any truck packs for direct shipment on-site
  • Manage receiving and timely delivery of replenishment orders from postal facility during Championship
  • Ensure satellite tents have correct beginning inventory and manage their replenishment during Championship
  • Manage all outbound shipments post-Championship including donations, consignment, ending inventory, etc.


  • Manage preparation for annual U.S. Open Vendor Meeting
  • Manage on-site housing for staff and interns
  • Produce presentations including vendor meeting, USO meetings, Ralph Lauren meetings
  • Travel to industry trade shows, if requested
  • Participate in intern interview process
  • Ensure staff sales are run efficiently



What You Bring to the USGA 


  • Critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, and collaboration with all levels of association management; service oriented approach
  • Team player who is also comfortable working independently
  • Ability to function well as part of a collaborative merchandise team effort
  • Ability to motivate, manage and mentor college interns
  • Ability to meet specific timelines and stay on schedule throughout the year
  • Willing to work overtime and some weekends as necessary
  • Willing to travel as necessary including spending up to eight weeks on-site during May and June at U.S. Open site
  • Ability to be involved with and manage heavy lifting of boxes up to 70 lbs. and movement of thousands of boxes of product
  • Computer knowledge including good understanding of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Sketch, and photo/video editing programs
  • Knowledge of golf industry vendors and product is helpful
  • Four-year college degree required
  • Minimum of 4 to 6 years of work experience preferred
