The USGA conducts the premier championships in golf, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international competitions including the Walker and Curtis Cup Matches. We govern the game on a global basis with The R&A, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, Equipment Standards and World Amateur Golf Rankings. In addition, the USGA’s Course Rating and Handicap systems are used on six continents in more than 50 countries.

Position Summary: 

As a member of the USGA Human Resources/People team, the Director of People Development, reporting to the Chief People Officer, is a newly created senior individual contributor role chartered with developing from the ground up, our USGA workforce capabilities for the short and long term. You will serve as the organization’s expert in functional and leadership skills development, career management, coaching, performance management and organizational effectiveness, all aligned with our culture and values as a nationally recognized not-for-profit sports organization. We are working to become a more vibrant community of engaged colleagues and a recognized great place to work. You will play an integral role in this journey by helping our workforce achieve greater impact, provide avenues for professional and personal growth and to identify and develop talent for the future. 

What You Can Expect 

  • Talent Management: help design a strategy with the Chief People Officer, that ensures the USGA develops and retains its people at all levels and across all functions establishing us as a destination where great people can contribute, grow and develop
  • Staff Development: build and implement a functional and professionals skills development plan that includes formal and informal approaches aligned with our strategic objectives and priorities
  • Leadership Development: build and implement manager and leadership development programs and processes based on a USGA leadership profile for the future ensuring new managers, emerging leaders and experienced leaders have the tools, resources and support to succeed
  • Career Management: create tools and processes that support and empower individual needs for career growth and self-awareness 
  • Organizational Effectiveness: lead efforts to gather organizational feedback through design and delivery of a regular employee survey and other mechanisms to elicit timely feedback for leadership
  • Change and Transformation: support our core values transformation efforts by ensuring all learning and development efforts are connected to our values 
  • Performance Management: work closely with senior HR business partner to redesign and implement our performance management, coaching and feedback processes aligned with our core values and leadership profile
  • Across all activities be prepared to design and facilitate targeted programs and experiences, identify cost effective online/social resources to support or drive key initiatives or identify outside consultant resources that may be appropriate
  • Provide strategic organizational development support on key change management efforts or targeted interventions
  • Support the Chief People Officer on talent assessment and succession planning efforts
  • Track, manage and share key talent data (i.e. progress of participants across all people development efforts to insure ongoing value and impact, short and long term performance and potential, investment impact, etc.)
  • Serve as an in house coach and advisor as needed along with Senior HR business partner
  • Be an influencer by introducing new ideas and approaches to the organization through the lens of people development
  • Partner with key HR team colleagues to insure efforts are aligned with talent acquisition, onboarding, culture and a great place to work initiatives
  • Support efforts to create and facilitate USGA staff recognition programs 
  • Support efforts around career and employment branding and content through, social networks and other platforms

What You Bring to the USGA 

  • 7-10 years of experience as a talent development professional
  • Proven ability to develop and implement an integrated learning and development strategy including budget and project timelines
  • Masters or PhD in relevant organizational and professional disciplines
  • You are ready for something different or make the big next step, and you have the results to show for it 
  • The passion to help a well-known, mission-driven and historic non-profit sports organization evolve as a progressive workplace and be a leader in making it happen
  • Deep knowledge and proficiency of organizational development and learning principles, tools and processes
  • Proven design and facilitation experience 
  • Proven change management experience
  • Polished presentation skills
  • Strong project management and problem solving skills and able to multitask while meeting ongoing deadlines
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to work with all levels in the organization, through candor, professionalism, inclusivity, and personal connection
  • Proven success cultivating a reputation of credibility and integrity within the organization as an authentic, trusted and respected expert, coach and advisor
  • Reputation as a forward thinker among your professional colleagues and peers
  • You should be able to express yourself in a collaborative and informed way in all forms (discussions, presentations, blogging, and social media)
  • Relevant tool and assessment certifications
  • Knowledge and comfort with widely used social and e-learning resources and platforms 
  • Interest in and understanding of the USGA and golf, both historic and present

The partnership has also produced educational materials such as the Science of Golf video series and a nationally-distributed newspaper insert which are provided to teachers as tools to enhance existing curriculum in schools. These lessons teach the science behind the USGA’s equipment testing, handicapping, and agronomy efforts.
