About the USGA: 

The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches. Together with The R&A, the USGA governs the game worldwide, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, Equipment Standards and World Amateur Golf Rankings. Position Summary: 

The Coordinator, Championship Communications oversees credentialing planning and implementation for USGA championships, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur, as well as the Curtis Cup and Walker Cup matches when they are played in the U.S.  S/He coordinates planning for and operation of media facilities (including distribution of information, transportation, media hotels and food and beverage contracts). S/He assists with Communications Department championship coverage and media relations/PR projects and assignments and provides project management support as needed in the department.

 


Duties 

 

  • Supervises internal and external procedures, information and data from online media credential applications for U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur, as well as Curtis Cup or Walker Cup when they are played in the U.S. Processes all media credential requests. Communicates championship hotel accommodations and other pertinent info to media members.
  • Serves as point of contact for media center operations for select USGA championships. Ensures proper execution of championship media relations as assigned including possible staffing at championships as support person. Coordinates site visits/media days for assigned USGA championships and team events and maintain email distribution lists.
  • Assists with the setup and operation of the media center facility at the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Amateur, as well as Curtis Cup or Walker Cup when they are played in the U.S., ensuring the set-up conforms to USGA branding guidelines and presents a world-class experience for media. Coordinates on-site food and beverage operations, media hotel and transportation accommodations, printing and/or electronic dissemination of media information, and coordination of shipment of all materials. Evaluates the effectiveness of USGA media center operations and services by overseeing a survey measurement process to drive ongoing improvement. Maintains administrative summaries for the named media centers.
  • Supervises schedule of events and invitations for expanded Championship Preview Workshop at Golf House, which will include ensuing year championships as well as some announced future sites. Oversees the document coordination of and presentations with ITPC services for possible online use. If needed will also communicate these presentations with future amateur championship host site committee members. 
  • Assists with department projects and provides limited project support, as requested.
  • Assembles media kits and information for distribution at various USGA Championships, Oversees the development of local media lists each year and assists with press release distribution. 

 

 

Knowledge, Education, Skills & Abilities 

 

  • Interpersonal, problem solving, organizational skills; large and simultaneous project planning and implementation.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to display consistent initiative that reflects a fresh approach and new ideas.
  • Journalism, media/public relations, writing, event planning skills and golf knowledge preferred.
  • Four-year college degree or higher from an accredited institution, with focus on Communications, Media Relations, or Journalism preferred.
  • Working relationship(s) with media, varied computer skills preferred.
  • Suggested skill in the following computer software titles: Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, PowerPoint, Vocus, e-mail admin software and internal CMS (utilizing basic HTML knowledge).
  •  Editing and proofreading skills required.
  • Must be detail-and deadline-oriented, must be able to problem-solve and be particularly mindful of factual accuracy and branding consistency.
  •  Must be able to travel approx. 50 days per year.

These lessons teach the science behind the USGA’s equipment testing, handicapping, and agronomy efforts.
