About the USGA: 

The USGA conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches, attracting players and fans from more than 160 countries. Together with The R&A, the USGA governs the game worldwide, jointly administering the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, equipment standards and World Amateur Golf Rankings. The USGA’s reach is global with a working jurisdiction in the United States, its territories and Mexico, serving more than 25 million golfers and actively engaging 150 golf associations.

 

The USGA is one of the world’s foremost authorities on research, development and support of sustainable golf course management practices. It serves as a primary steward for the game’s history and invests in the development of the game through the delivery of its services and its ongoing “For the Good of the Game” grants program. Additionally, the USGA’s Course Rating and Handicap systems are used on six continents in more than 50 countries.

Position Summary: 

The USGA Communications Intern(s) will handle media relations and communications support for USGA championships both on-site and from the home office. Office duties include supervision of production of Player Guides for the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open; assistance with the collection and posting of championship qualifying results to USGA Web sites; assistance with the development of the championship player biographical database, assistance with research, writing, fact checking, and proofing of content for USGA communications; and assistance with on-site posting of content on www.usga.org, other USGA Web sites and social media sites.


What You Can Expect 

  • Communications duties at selected USGA Championships to include writing, distribution and posting of daily stories (game and sidebar); results distribution; and media assistance and service (to include player and officials interviews and broadcast television liaison among other duties).
  • Support championship communications from home office, including story editing and research, Web site posting, and results distribution.
  • Support development of Player Guides for U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, including collection of data from players via telephone, fax, and email; as well as preparation and formatting of online player biographical data for media and USGA Web site use.
  • Handle proofreading, editing, writing, posting of content for USGA Web sites and press releases, with an emphasis on fact checking.
  • Collect and collate biographical data for entry into championship player biographical database.
 

What You Bring to the USGA 

  • Position requires general communications and media relations skills, as well as familiarity with special events operations.
  • Journalism/Public Relations background or writing experience is a must.
  • Up-to-date computer skills and the ability to effectively communicate on the phone, via e-mail and through various Web site and social media outlets.
  • Familiarity with USGA history and practices desirable.


Additional Comments: 

This is a paid position; however, relocation and housing will be the responsibility of the intern.
